Let's be fair, SoA was pretty good for 3-4 seasons.

Cliffs:

- Campbell and Grace are too close copies of Boardwalk Empire's Nelson Van Alden and Margaret Schroeder
- Campbell and Tommy aren't close enough copies of Nucky Thompson and Tony Soprano

Also:
Quote:
Freddie Thorne ... brandishing the missing machine gun, and announcing ‘meet my little friend’ like Scarface.

Actually what he said was: ‘sergeant Thorne, reporting for duty,’ which was almost as bad.

let's keep going this seems fun

Ultimately, it only served to prove that, when it comes to truly great shows, British TV still can’t match American television.
Quote:
After shooting the top of Kimber’s head off, Tommy told Billy’s men ‘it’s over’ and told them ‘go home to your families’. It was all a bit Hollywood.

also a bit of a chuckle at "truly great shows" and "american television" in the same sentence. I mean sure there were some greats, but MOST of american television is beyond ****, there's just so much of it that it stands to reason if you make enough shows and throw ****tons of money at most of them, a select few will be great.

watched both seasons today while i was sick.. pretty epic. to those that were talking about the SoA comparison, i actually texted a friend and said i thought this show is everything that SoA wished it was.

Watched them all in one go! Best series I've seen in years.

Surprised it's not been mentioned but the soundtrack is freaking awesome, especially if you're into that kind of music. Off the top of my head I can't think of a better one for a show. From what I saw of SoA (~3 seasons) I remember it being pretty good and BB had some great songs used very well.

just finished both seasons in 2 days on netflix, enjoyed it alot especially since i went in not expecting much since i'd never heard of it beforehand. glad to see it was picked up for another season.

SoA was pretty terrible imo, getting worse as it progressed, dont think its even in the same class. 0 character development, fairly stupid plots, etc. boardwalk empire is a half step above i'd say.

Also watched this amidst the snow days in the Northeast. Very entertaining show! It's definitely more on par with shows like House of Cards that are going for pure entertainment value/coolness factor as opposed to elite show, but it's great at being that! Great cast, great soundtrack, great set design, etc.

I kind of think it it has the potential to be 'elite' but the 6 episode seasons may hold it back bit, leading it to focus more on the entertainment factor than depth.

Ofc it's impossible to say, and we'll probably never know, whether it could pull off longer seasons as it'd be too much for the sole writer/creator Stephen Knight.

Also, what are the odds there is a US attempt at a remake in the near future?
It seems like a prime target considering those confusing accents and all...

personal preference, but i dont think it can really become 'elite' because its more of a 'lets see how tommy can get out of this one' type of show set as a period piece. very enjoyable to watch the first time, but not one of those shows that i would watch more than once since you know how the plot was resolved. elite shows i would say need to hold up to second, third or even more watchings.

Enjoyed the first season, just started the 2nd. I think it's really good, not great. Love the Tommy character and most of the plot lines, but find some of the scenes/writing/acting kind of cheesy, esp Campbell. He's a ridiculous caricature, tho I do think Sam Neill is doing well with what he has to work with. Will keep watching tho, for sure.

This show has gotten better and better. It helps I love period dramas. No problems here understanding the accent.

Man I adore this show.

Cracks me up how many people hate the music. I would electrocute anyone I met in real life who thought that. The various arguments are ridiculous too.

Just started this (through 1st 2 episodes). It's very good. Has the potential to be better than Boardwalk for me.

No but based on previous air dates (9/13 2013, 10/2 2014) it's prolly gonna be around Sept/Oct again this year.
