Well if it's really a purgatory thing then Ben's staying could be a form of penance. He says something along the lines of "I have stuff to finish here".

The way I interpreted it is, that Jack died and that is his own personal heaven. Everything that happened happened. Hurley and Ben are still on the island and will continue to live for whoever knows how long. The people on the plane with Lapidus are still alive etc; I'm thrilled that they decided to keep the past unchanged.

I'm pretty satisfied. They left a lot of doors opened, but they made it clear the show stars and ends with Jack. It was his story, the rest were just supporting characters.
Interesting take.

So wouldn't 1 person have to not have a flash sideways because they were last for that to work?

Maybe they just agreed to move on together?

Not only that but why did they make the tree fall onto Ben in the first place and why did they make him appear to be stuck if they weren't going to address it. I can buy that they wanted to give him a redeeming moment in saving Hugo, but why waste a minute or two with them being unable to get him out if it wasn't important at all?

It goes well with the Purgatory-ish theory.
Maybe I need more knowledge of Purgatory. I don't understand why he's still hanging around.

Because he's not at peace with himself, or something? Is that the point of purgatory?

I really don't know much about it.

I know it is the waiting room for heaven or whatever, but don't know much more.`

He wasn't a part of Jack's heaven.

Ben, Richard, Ana Lucia, Michael/Walt, etc....everyone that wasn't there...wasn't a part of the "group" that all helped each other get to where they needed to be to move on. Christian said Jack needed their help, and he needed theirs, for him to get there...and he was the last one. The group needed to all be together to move on. Ben was never a part of the core group. Michael betrayed everyone's trust when he killed Ana Lucia and Libby and left. Walt just ended up not being a factor in them ever moving on. Same with every other character that wasn't in the "church".

Was Christian ever on the island besides the MIB taking his form?

The Ben/Hurley spinoff writes itself. Ben falls down the tunnel and becomes a black smoke monster, rinse and repeat.

so we still know nothing about the island though, why its important, the light, if it really does need protecting or not and anything about the statue or the numbers...

My first post in years just because of all the grunching, and a new name because I forgot my password.

I thought it was an incredibly satisfying conclusion. For said grunchers, some quick observations.

The wreckage is the original wreckage - an homage to the fact that it's still there, and an apt coda to everything that happened in 6 years. Lapidus, Richard (thankfully getting to live a long, regular life,) Miles, Claire, Kate and Sawyer made it off the island on the plane, leading to the next point...

Jack's dad said two things that were incredibly important - everything that happened HAPPENED, and some people were dead, and some lived very long lives. The new planies get to live their lives in present time.

Curious that the alt-timeline is actually a flashforward since Ben and Hurley had clearly already experienced their stewardship of the island for a while, acknowledging their #1 and #2.

I loved so much about this ep, and it is without a doubt the best ep in the series. In fact, I called a friend to say that the first half hour was the best half hour I had ever seen in the series.

BTW, for the gay, I cried the most during the Sawyer/Juliet reunion.

So much to love in here.

- Jay
