So there weren't two timelines. What happened, happened/

my theory is the wreckage in the end was them trying to fly off the island and failing. so they are all dead now in the flash sideways and chilling in heaven.

to my understanding the island was purgatory and now they all "moved on" to the after life,

they were all dead to begin with, from season 1

They died much later than Jack did, but as Christian said, the timing doesn't matter. They're just all there because they were alone and were all brought together by the island.

The main thing I'm concerned with right now is the significance of Ben not going in, despite clearly having history with Hurley on island, post-Lost.

Who's to say they didn't get off the island successfully. Jack's dad said that some people died long after Jack did. Some of those folks probably lived long happy lives.

I enjoyed the ending and I'm not a particularly big fan of LOST.

how far off am i?
I don't know what the hell happened, but Jack's Dad said that everyone dies and time has no meaning in this place. So I don't think the wreckage was the plane that just took off.

That seemed to be confirmed by the Hurley/Ben conversation where they seem to acknowledge working together on the island for some period of time as #1 and #2.

I think they escaped and lived out their lives before they went through purgatory. Remember that some lived much longer than jack.

Creators have explicitly said that this was not the case.

If anything is purgatory (which I don't think is the aptest of terms here) it's the flash sideways.

Sigh, didn't like the ending either. Thought the first 2 hours were going to lead up to a really good ending but it seemed like a let down.

because if the plane flew off the island, which to my understanding it cannot, how are they all dead and chilling together? im just guessing, im a bit lost too, but to me it makes sense the wreckage wasnt a flashback

i would have accepted just about any ending but this. the made the entire series meaningless. no answers, just everybody meets up after they die to go to 'heaven' together.

I'm on boat with this theory. How were Hurley/Ben there?

They get off the island successfully and live a happy life (presumably, for those new-Ajira-Six).

They ultimately die though.

Hurley and Ben ultimately die, too, despite being island protectors.

<3 the ending a lot.

I think this was very well done. I'm not sure what's going on though.

The plane didnt crash i assume when kate told jack on alt timeline/purgatory that "she missed him so much",
is because she died much much later after seeing him for last time on the island.

Well certainly Ben and Hurley lived longer. I'm guessing the final shot was the plane of them leaving.

alt timeline was purgatory. they all had to be together to move on. some didn't die till long after jack died.

i'm thinking the plane debris during the credits were all a homage to the very first plane crash that started it all.

This makes sense to me. Especially with Jack's dad's line about how some of the people died well before and well after Jack. And there's no time where they now are. Makes me think the airplane actually did get off the island safely too.

Yes, this is clearly what happened IMO
