Some kind of doomsday equation boiled down to those numbers, no matter how many different ways "scientists" worked it out. So their only significance was they were related to some event that threatens all mankind.

The numbers were on the side of the hatch, so it would make sense to use them as a code for that computer. All the rest was coincidence. Of course to weave an extended elaborate stoyline makes for better drama, just an opinion. St Elegis was all in a snow globe.
