To be fair I fon't think it is possible to compare "Tim" to the sopranos or mad men . Those are dramas whose main purpose wasn't to make people laugh.

The humor in Tim comes from the way he tries to treat the outrageous situayions he finds himself in as if they are everyday occurrances.

A fairer commparison as others have mentioned would be curb your enthusiasm or Seinfeld.

You are right though, this is among the best comedies on tv now, Right up therewith 30 rock

I'd rank it as second behind It's Always Sunny, but it's really close. Both are amazing even on their "off" eps, something few shows manage to do.
