I think he was portrayed properly. Most accounts have him being dopey all the time - he slept until 1 or 2 in the afternoon and was stoned all day. A lot of people remark about how he rarely seemed excited or lost his cool - especially when there was a lot of action.
I don't think he was portrayed dopey at all. And I don't remember one scene where they showed him using drugs. There may have been one but they def did not portray him as a stoner.

I like the show, can't stand the narration. I don't really know any details about the RL story so for example when he

Spoiler:
gets his mugshot taken for the first time and narrator says something like 'ole Pablo would regret that one down the line'

I just get really grated. Just let me figure it out when it happens. Same pet peeve when movies start with the ending for absolutely no reason like, say, Transcendence

He's shown smoking joints quite a bit and at various times during the day from the time he wakes up until the time he goes to bed.

Eh, the story has a lot going on behind the scenes. Even in books it is hard to keep all the players and their shifting alliances, goals, and politics straight. I believe it is a necessary evil.

Just like having Steve be a composite character allowing the viewer the U.S. version of certain events.

These choices are obvious compromises for the sake of keeping the story cleaner. This also happened in Band of Brothers (for example) a certain points. In order to get certain portions of the story told many more characters would have to be introduced. That starts raising a number of issues - especially budget.

can anyone explain the war tax? why did he keep pushing his employees to pay him more and more? to see who was really loyal? I mean, he didn't really need the money... or was he broke after la catedral?

He was fine financially. The war tax was basically a means of a forced legacy payment. He had to promote two members to oversee the operation and their earning capacity soared as a result.

It also kept them accountable to Pablo. The Medellin Cartel had a traditional structure with a top person - like the Mafia. Modern cartels like Cali were mostly a collection of interchangeable cells that that observed a central power - which was a group of members. The Cali model was a way of ensuring the cartel would continue with interchangeable parts as they suffered losses. Medellin was vulnerable because the more they lost towards the top of the ladder, the harder it was for them to replace and continue functioning.

Haha, I wasn't talking about smoking a few joints. But maybe that was what was meant by saying he was a stoner. I just meant that the show didn't show him ripping lines of coke every episode.

Yes I agree, I don't think I can remember him doing anything other than weed.
It did feel though as the show went on he was shown smoking more and more.

Right. Which is why I stated that IRL, Pablo rarely did coke and he didn't drink.

Good show. The main DEA guy and narrator werd bad though. Both the actor and the character made his parts hard to watch.

finished ep 10 yesterday and I thought this was a one season thing until it ended.

Can they really have enough material for 8-10 more episodes?

easy.

also, I can see the show expanding in future seasons to cover the downfall of the Cali cartel and the rise of the Mexican cartels.

Just finished this off last night. Thought the progression of Pablo's addiction to power was pretty well done although the last couple of episodes felt a bit rushed like they were just trying to create a season cliffhanger.

Have to agree on the Murphy character being a weakspot. The scenes where he intimitades the lorry driver and flips out at the taxi driver were lol unbelievable.

Reading up on Escobar it seems they haven't left alot of meat for a season 2, should have made a longer 1 season show imo.

Whoever said Pablo's son looked weird and like a midget later in the season, I agree. What was wrong with him? I thought maybe it was Danny Devito in the last couple episodes.
