Re: New Show- Mr. Robot

Dunno if anyone had mentioned it but I just watched the Hello Ladies HBO movie - Ders's wife has a small role in it as a model and sexy drug dealer friend has a brief appearance too. Just though that was odd since I've never seen either of them in anything else.

...you saw this on... reddit? Oh god.

Yes, it's a short summary and it doesn't do it justice, but I guess OP has a point and some truth to it.

Most of it's true through the lens of a tard. Some of it's factually incorrect. It's not referred to as 'Evil Corp' and he doesn't say "AFK" or "IRL" in normal conversation.

I wouldn't worry, it's just 4chan robots getting upset about the lack of realism in TV's depiction of them, i.e. the main isn't an overweight virgin who still lives at home and wears an anonymous mask.

Blade Runner still holds up well after all these years.

Re: New Show- Mr. Robot

That review is a typical 4chan user trying to be edgy and counter culture. Of course if something that is actually somewhat relatable to the 4chan user comes around, they have to lash out at it.

That critique just takes obvious parts of the show that are stereotypical (which the show knows because it is over the top in its self awareness) and tries to make them into flaws, when the stereotypical nature of the plot/characters are something to be embraced.

Re: New Show- Mr. Robot

Couldn't make it through the season. This show is fundamentally ludicrous but takes itself so damn seriously with seemingly no awareness of how silly it is. Its politics are borderline juvenile and lack nuance - Evil Corp is practically the Empire from Star Wars while Tyrell's personality and actions are excessive to the point of caricature.

The best moments for me were when Elliot was tangling with that drug-dealer guy. Dealing with a low-level criminal felt a lot more gritty, immediate and realistic than the attempts to bring down an absurd fictional company.

Re: New Show- Mr. Robot

I think it was aware of how silly it is. The drug dealer storyline was very gritty even as told for USA. I'm guessing he was asked to rein that in or cut it quickly. Almost all drug using was cut by midway through the season, as well.

I never thought Star Wars Empire once while watching.

I'm guessing you weren't a fan of Fight Club, American Psycho, V for Vendetta etc. I have never seen a first season of a cable TV series that was analyzed scene by scene like Mr. Robot was when it aired. Season 2 can't come fast enough for me.

I think Fight Club is overrated but a Fincher movie can hardly fail to be stylistically interesting at the very least. Don't see any comparison with a comic-book movie like V for Vendetta which was flawed but still fairly entertaining. The problem I have with Mr Robot is that the absurdity gets in the way of investment in the plot or characters - a lot of it fails to ring true for a show that is supposedly set in the real world.

The show isn't set in the real world its staged in the mind of an unreliable narrator - that's the genius of the writing.

I think it's apparent fairly quickly that there's something off about Elliot's view of people and events but there are plenty of people and things that happen when Elliot isn't around. I found Tyrell and his wife almost cartoonish in their excess.

And the problem I had with the politics is that for the 9 episodes I watched, there was no critique of Mr Robot's plans to attack Evil Corp. The show did at least acknowledge that he's insane but there's no consideration of whether wiping out everyone's debt is really a good idea. I can't get interested in watching a bunch of ignorant hackers trying to "take on the man" without any counter-argument to their simplistic views. I would have been far more interested in storylines about Elliot battling gangsters, pedos and other low-level criminals while dealing with his severe personal issues.
