I mean I read it first before I had realized that he may not be real. Admittedly it was back after episode 1. Who knows how long it would have taken for me to catch on that it was a possibility (if at all).
Well, but that theory was EVERYWHERE on the internet, and if there's one show whose audience can be trusted to know what twitter and reddit are, it's this one.
But yeah, at this point, it would be a big twist to the average Joe watcher for him to be fake, because the last few episodes keep having Mr Robot do **** when Elliot isn't around, so if you didn't already have that belief you certainly wouldn't be able to get on board with it now.
So while people came up with that theory because the show set it up, it's now sort of refuted that theory, and for the show to go "LOL he was fake all along, we just changed the rules between episodes" is unnecessary and cheap. However, lots of TV is unnecessary and cheap, so I still really do think they are just straight up lifting the Fight Club plot.
