First off he is very talented and he has earned his success

He's portrayed as having been in at least one nationwide ad campaign, and if you do those, I believe you make six figures, and if the ad keeps airing, you keep getting residuals. Plus he's shown doing other ad work and acting work. I don't think he's entirely unsuccessful in this world we're presented with, he's just not a comedian.

I think he does get punished, but not like, Louie punished - he just kinda looks like an ass and the show moves on. He is definitely punished for being an idealist when he does that percentage thing with Rachel, and I think we're meant to see that as a parallel for his insistence on scouring Yelp reviews - he thinks the world can work like his apps make it seem, but that's not true.
I'm not sure where this show goes after Season 1.
