Re: The Leftovers - Season 3

Here's something new to consider.

Kevin is surely going to get drowned and die in the next episode. We'll presumably see him in the limbo-hotel world he visited before.

When he's there, he may see Laurie just like he saw the comatose Mary.

If he does, will he not only bring himself back but also bring back Laurie?

Doubt she'll be coming back -- maybe just serve the guide role like Virgil.

Re: The Leftovers - Season 3

I wasn't paying attention at the end, is it confirmed she plans committing suicide? She's still close to where Kevin and Co are, right? My first thought when I saw her putting on some kind of wet suit was she's planning to make sure Kevin survives his drowning in secret (give him oxygen while under water or something).

You must've missed the scene where Nora talked about scuba diving as being the optimal way to commit suicide.

Lame. The best way to go with scuba is to narc-out on nitrogen. Should have been mentioned

More likely that she's going there to make sure that he doesn't come back.

That means that on October 14th about 2 million pregnant women should have departed, as well as 2 million fetuses, where about 40000 women should have departed together with their fetuses.

Of course some fetuses will have departed without their mothers being already aware of their pregnancy. And some pregnant women would depart so early in their pregnancy that they would just leave small chunks of cells behind. And maybe separate departures were only possible after the first month or so.

Still there should be well over a million known cases of departed fetuses worldwide, and departed pregnant women leaving their fetuses behind, respectively. In the US alone the number should be more than 50k. Definitely big enough numbers that they would make a larger deal about it, but in the show we only learned about the departure of Laurie's fetus.

I think this is also relevant because if that happened according to the numbers it kinda debunks the radiation theory imo, especially if women departed without their fetuses.

Was this mentioned in the book?

edit: Just googled a bit and apparently a seminar on fetus departure was advertised on the conference Nora attended.
I'm more interested in mother-to-be departures being addressed, as mom disappearing with a bloody fetus flopping to the ground where she was once standing would be truly horrific.

There's definitely a non-zero chance she didn't commit suicide (doesn't take that big of a plot twist to override what the ep ended with), but I don't see how our takeaway as viewers could be anything else than that she committed suicide. If we never hear from Laurie again she 100% did commit suicide.

it's just insane to see that cold open then the convo about scuba suicide n then think she's doing anything other than committing suicide.

there is no way the writers are that bad.

Re: The Leftovers - Season 3

Yeah, I mean pretty much the only way she's not dead is if she, say, has second thoughts and decides not to screw up her gear after all while underwater. It wouldn't be the most shocking thing in the world of The Leftovers for her to have some weird underwater hallucination or whatever to stop her from doing it, which is what I meant in my post above.

Oh and, there's also a nonzero (albeit small) chance she somehow returns Kevin style from the hotel. I basically just wouldn't write her character off just yet.

But yeah 100% that was at least the beginning of a suicide attempt, no way to reach any other conclusion imo or the writers would have to be complete idiots which they are not.

The flood that Kevin Sr. is predicting could also empty out whatever body of water she's in, just like when Kevin tied the brick to his leg and took a dive.

I thought when Jill called she would have second thoughts and tell the boat guy to just take her back to shore.

Re: The Leftovers - Season 3

Yeah, I gotta admit that as huge a fan as I am of this show, I also thought that it was slightly poorly written / out of the blue. I don't mean that Laurie killing herself wouldn't be plausible/reasonable in the context of the entire series, but I didn't quite get what exactly happened that drove her to off herself right now, especially with the Jill phone call as well. Clearly that's what she did by jumping into the water, but I feel like I must have missed something that made her give up right now and so hastily? Also if the world was possibly ending the next day, I'd ride it out for sure rather than miss out on the spectacle of the apocalyptic flood.

Don't forget Michael telling her that Judas committed suicide after the betrayal - right after she said that she would be Judas.

I mean, it was a random thought - I wasn't saying her planning to save Kevin was a lock or something and I did get we were supposed to think she plans to kill herself.

And yeah, it would be a pretty ****ty twist it was just the combination of Kevin going to drown, her having diving equipment plus her history of enabling people's delusions that made me think of it.

Laurie being Virgil and acting as Kevin's guide this time around, knowing what they were planning to do, is something i never considered, and kinda cool

oh ya I'm not saying it's impossible she doesn't somehow survive, I'm just saying that was a suicide attempt 100%.

This show doesn't strike me as the type that would go with a butnahhhhhhhh she's alive swerve with 2 eps of the series left.

I think that Laurie is going to try to keep him in the hotel, and Kevin will be forced to either stay, or find a way to make it back. I think Kevo will always try to make it back

Yeah I think the message was pretty clear at the end. She gave Kevin the lighter that said Don't Forget Me. She had one last happy moment with her kids. She realized she could no longer fix other people, because she couldn't fix herself. That's why she finally gave up trying to stop Nora or Kevin from killing themselves. She understood them.

Well said. I still think this plot arc was clumsily written but this is definitely why she went scuba diving.

Too lazy to quote the post but someone said they're rooting for the show ending with Kevin killing himself and nothing happening on 10/14-- not only am I also rooting for this, I think it's the most likely outcome.

She could abort her attempt - and clearly her pills overdose followed by the ipecac vomiting scene early tonight was foreshadowing that possibility. But it could just as easily be foreshadowing the fact that she wasn't ready then, but circumstances have changed and she is now.

I wonder how much she knows about the hotel/purgatory story from Kevin? Do we know how much of this he has shared? There's a chance she specifically intends to intervene the next time he goes in and make sure he doesn't come back, which she would probably see as a final act of kindness to her former husband and the father of her children.

Re: The Leftovers - Season 3

Yeah I think it's very likely that Kevin ends up in the hotel and meets Laurie there and we're in for a hell of a hotel episode this or next week. I don't think the world is ending anyway, either, so I would expect the last episodes to be mostly about the character and not so much about whether Kevin will actually somehow save the world by being Jesus 2.0. Really looking forward to these eps.
