The Leftovers - Season 3 The Leftovers - Season 3

There was a moment is season 2 where a weird woman encamped outside of Miracle kept saying to Nora, "that's not your baby!"... finally she exploded and yelled, "shut the F*** up!". Was such an awesome delivery not sure another actress has the combo of vulnerability and badass-ness to pull it off. That entire scene where the baby gets taken and she is running after her, was a highlight scene of the series for me.

Yeah as 72off mentioned she was able to do that many times which is quite a feat. My favorite scene was her meeting with Holy Wayne in S1. Everything she did in this show was believable and her character ran the gamut of emotions. Sadly she probably won't even get nominated for an award.

Always loved the scene when she meets Kevin for the second time at the court house, asks him to go to Miami on a whim and when he mentions he has a daughter, she blurts out "Oh, **** your daughter!". Think that was the moment where I was fully on board with Co.on/Nora.

In the UK (not sure about other English speaking countries) it's a racist term for a black person.

0 Emmy nominations in all 3 seasons, lol Emmy voters - pretty tilting.

EDIT: Actually, Dowd did get a nod for Guest Actress, so 1 nomination

Lol Emmys. I don't even want to look at the list of nominations because it's going to have so much terrible crap that it'll just tilt me to no end. I bet shows like Mr Robot and The Americans are sweeping those.

and Bojack Horseman couldn't even get nominated in the animated categories el oh el
(just 1 nom for Kristen Schaal, so similar to Dowd)

Old lady and I watched this and finished a few weeks ago. Pretty fun. I would put in in my second tier of HBO shows. Thought Theroux was fantastic but Chris Eccleston stole the show.

The final scene with him and Nora was incredible. I've probably watched that 20 times.

Same here. I will get lost in a never ending hole of YouTube videos of the best moments from this show. If there is a show with more powerful moments please point me in that direction asap. I've got this and The Wire 1 and 1A.

+1

re-watched the series again since it ended, and i gotta say that S3 played much better for me then, especially the ending
(even though i still maintain that they really could have used the extra 2 eps to sell everything)

and i thought of this show the other day when they mentioned that shooting in Texas killed 4% of the town's population, was like damn that's 2x The Leftovers = Season 4 one time!?

Yep I have Wire 1 by a comfortable margin and Leftovers 2.

Since we seem to have similar tastes, what are your 3/4/5?

3 would probably be Breaking Bad. I think I'd have Seinfeld and Cheers as my next two. Peak Sopranos was great, but I think it was a bit overrated. If you haven't seen The Handmaid's Tale, make plans to do so. The first season was great and right up there with season 3 of The Leftovers.

so i came across this video the other day and learned that this scene mirroring thing is something they seem to like on this show.

1 - opening scene with Sam's mom / the Departure paired with Kevin at the laundromat with Lily in S2
2 - Paypals: Nora meeting Wayne in S1 paired with Nora donating to the missing girls fund in S2 (pretty obv, even i caught this one on 1st viewing)
3 - end of season anarchy: Kevin going into the burning house to save Jill in S1 paired with him going into the clinic after being shot in S2 (kinda caught this one myself, the anarchy part of it anyway)

another video i saw pointed out how the scene in the car after Kevin beats up Tommy's dad in S1 mirrors the scene of them in S2 just before Dean shoots up their car, so there are probably more examples of this. makes sense given how many things seem to repeat in this show.

anyway, i think it's mostly just a fun stylistic thing for them more than anything else, but i could be wrong. but if it means anything, it'd probably be in this one:

(i never thought much about Nora's story bc i don't really care or feel that it's important whether it's true or not, but have seen/read stuff since then that leads me to believe that she is indeed telling the truth fwiw aka nothing)

Best show of the decade AINEC. Been rewatching the whole thing with gf lately and it's somehow even more gripping/heartbreaking on third watch.

I noticed that Lindelof's doing Watchmen for HBO that's set to premiere later this year. I've never been a comic book guy at all but I keep hearing how it's the GOAT graphic novel out there and that it's basically unfilmable because it's so complex or something along those lines. It's starring Regina King and Don Johnson (!). Should be interesting.

Watched this entire show the last 3 months and want to say WOW, I didnt thnk I woudl enjoy it at all with how zany I felt some things were as I hate how sometimes things arent concrete.

But the ****ign writing on this show in this show was so.****ing.good. very well done by lindenhof. lot of eps made me pnder and think and it kept me hooked. well acted and very good soundtrack. always heard it discused highly on the internet but its def a good show that makes you think. I dont know how good or whre on my list I put it at but im glad I saw it. very well done show. im so happy I got around to finally watch it. again, def made me ponder and thnk and had a few gripping scenes

I do want to say season 1 is underrated and to me, my fav season overall. I felt if it wasnt for the clean writing I wouldn't have enjoyed s2 or 3(my least fav) as much. felt s2 started out way way too abruptly and out there. alas, the last 3 eps were pretty great and tied it in well.

as for nora

Spoiler:
I beleived her story

So I started watching this yesterday. Binged the first 7 eps and I'm a bit underwhelmed. As a huge fan of Lost and more recently Watchmen, I had to give this a shot. But it seems to be a mix of both of these other shows worst parts. Lost is known for having mysteries that in the end summed up to nothing and watchmen had this way of writing eps that kept you in the dark for a long time until you finally understood everything and that was really satisfying. The problem that I have with leftovers is that almost everything is BORING to watch. I can't stand ****ing old ladies dressed in white and smoking anymore. I just watched the episode where kev senior gave his son that nat geo magazine and the emphasis on it was so big I thought "this seems like one of those old Lost mysteries that will add to nothing in the end".

Anyways, I just googled some plot points from future eps to see if they get my attention so I keep watching but I got to this:

Quote:
After travelling to Australia on the advice of the voices in his head, Kevin Sr. learns from a prophetic chicken that a flood will come on the seventh anniversary of the Departure, leading him to believe it is his destiny to stop the flood. He travels to various Indigenous communities to learn chants from native tribes (which he believes can stop the flood if he performs them).*
Also, it seems that after dragging the magazine stuff for 3 seasons, in the end its just some trivia like the dharma initiative backstories in lost.
Guess I'll just re-watch watchmen instead.

FYP

S1 of the show was largely boring and underwhelming. They basically rebooted it for season 2, and while this shouldn't have worked, somehow seasons 2-3 were GOAT level television. When I first watched this show, I gave up after like 1.5 episodes of S1, years later randomly watched S2E1 and was completely sucked in. It's just sooooo good. I think you could easily start from S2E1 without having watched a second of S1 and it would still work.

The only other example I can think of where such reboot worked fantastically is Parks & Rec. S1 of that show wasn't well received and it was mostly pretty bad. They fixed what didn't work (in The Leftovers' case it was getting rid of the teenagers, giving a lot less attention to GR, giving Nora more screen time, finding ways to make the show little more fun and a little less grim, and sending a couple of key characters that didn't work on s1 into the background while introducing new ones), and somehow managed to make it one of the best sitcoms of all time.

The first 5 episodes are arguably the bottom 5 episodes of the show with the exception of episode 3. The Guest (ep6) is when it started to get good. S1E8-10 were great. Then it was elite after that. Keep watching.

I'm grunching because I have only seen S1 & S2.

Fiction is becoming reality. There is a city in Italy's most heavily hit region where nobody has corona, and people are starting to speak of a Miracle. I have not found an article in English yet, will most likely start popping up in a few days.
