This seems worthy of its own thread. Reviews are off the charts and everyone loved the video game. Premiers tonight.

I shall appoint myself The 2+2 King Of TLoU!!

I love this franchise more than a lot of family members so I’m beyond excited!! Haven’t stopped thinking about it since the review embargos were lifted.

reviews seem good, but i thought it was pretty meh (though i didn't play the games, nor am i much of a fan of the zombie apocalypse genre). still have no idea who these ppl are or wtf is going on ... typically you get into **** like that in a pilot. idk

how faithful does the story appear to be to the games so far? pilot really played like a series of video games missions and cut scenes lol

The pilot was ok, nothing special. It looks like HBO's version of The Walking Dead so it'll probably be decent .I can't stand the actress playing Ellie, she's ****ing annoying.

As a series, this will be incredible. As an episode 1…. Great if you know the game. But this didn’t work as a pilot like it should have for those unfamiliar.

For me…. I loved it. They did a great job with the changes. Some were to speed things up, others were to slow things down. My only issue is that this should have been a 2 episode premiere. The season is 9 episodes. Why not round it up to 10 and build the **** out of the world first?

As for THAT moment….

Spoiler:
That was WAY more impactful than the game. They did Sarah’s death scene beautifully.

The actress that played Sarah really did do a great job with her character and they nailed all those earlier scenes. Pedro Pascal has really nailed Joel so far as well.

I think Bella Ramsey as Ellie is fine and I think she did decent job in her small parts so far although having just started up the game again this week I think the scenes from the game where Ellie tells Joel his watch is broken shortly after they first meet as well as the scene where they learn of Ellie's bite mark are portrayed and a bit more impactful in the game. Her saying of those lines just felt a bit more forced and less sincere than the character and voice actor in the game; less emotion.

Thought the way they set that scene up though with Joel having the flashback to Sarah was a great addition though. They definitely have time to bond the two characters and I'm optimistic they'll do a good job with it.

I thought it was a very good start. For those on the fence, watch through episode 3. That’s the episode that all of the reviewers say turns the show with one reviewer calling it the best episode of tv he’s ever seen.

Just re-watched episode one without my eight year old asking questions and inquisitive about different Jurassic Park like toy stories in the background. It was much more watchable and enjoyable during the 2nd go-around and I think some of those things I mentioned above are more so down to taste; game Vs TV show than anything else and the 2nd time around I found Bella Ramsey's performance as Ellie much better overall.

Spoiler:
I'm excited to see how it progresses as now it seems nine episodes is almost too short of a time to really get into all of the first game. I've seen they even include the character "Frank" which is basically Bill's boyfriend and only is ever shown as a dead man in the actual game but looking over the credits it appears he will actually be portrayed as an actor in this show. Also with that consideration you mention episode 3 as being great TV. I'm not sure how they'll pace this overall but at the current pace that puts them right in Bill's town around episode 3. Should be fun regardless; as replaying the game again I really enjoyed interacting with the character of Bill and playing the game in his town.

I know nothing about the game or the series at all. Watched E1 and I'm game to watch.

Seems like TWD reboot in a way but whatever as long as it doesn't morph into that steaming pile of dog **** then I'll watch S1 through

I’m 100% confident it won’t go near there. I’m guessing 4 seasons at the most. I could see a 5th if they go beyond Part 2 since I’m pretty sure they working on it secretly at Naughty Dog. But ND is known for taking their time and really pushing themselves to do something unique when they make a game. They’re one of the few studios who is allowed that kind of freedom. Unless it gets GRRM’d, the “final” season will probably coincide with The Last Of Us Part 3

I know it’s on me, but TWD comparisons infuriate me. That goes with the territory but I can’t help it lol I hate TWD, don’t like zombie stuff in general, but love and adore TLoU.

I thought it sort of was? I doubt all the eps are going to be 80 mins long, but I don't want to check in case of spoilers.

Coming in almost completely blind and thought it was great

The length for the first 3 are:

Spoiler:
80 minutes
55 minutes
85 minutes

It was sort of a 2ep premiere but I’d have liked to have had a similar pacing as the first half. Part of that is I want as much of this as I can get and I don’t think I got enough lol

Earlier seasons of The Walking Dead were not that bad. I don't hate the comparisons as I enjoy the genre in general but I'm also expecting alot more from HBO and the creators, writers, etc for The Last of Us.

It's fairly cool we are going to get some lengthy episodes. The game is amazing; story included; but turning this into a show they are obviously going to have to explore the characters and environments much more than they were explored in the games simply because in the game alot of your time is spent killing infected playing the levels and that just doesn't translate to a TV show even though I'm sure they'll be some great action in this show. So basically they have to flesh out the story more and I think they did a good job of that in the first episode.

Agree the early seasons of TWD were fine

Also agree that I give HBO the benefit of the doubt

Just watched the first ep. Never played the games so know nothing about the plot or characters.

Overall I liked it. Opening half hour or so set in Austin was fantastic. Really intense and suspenseful. Escape sequence in the pickup truck was really well filmed and choreographed. Scene where you see the old lady neighbor moving in the background while the daughter is looking at the DVDs, legit gave me goosebumps.

Dropped off a bit with the time jump to Boston and pace slowed down somewhat. Still thought it was good though. I'll be watching.

For players of the game…

Spoiler:
How the hell are they going to fit the rest of the game into this??

I’ve been discussing it with a couple of other fanatics and we have no idea. The more plot points we bring up, the more we remember that we consider necessary.

It’s known that episode 3 is Bill focused, but does that mean Tess is out at the end of episode 2? Seems like a waste of someone of her caliber. Or maybe they coincide Bill and Frank with Joel and Tess, and Ellie and Riley? I really don’t have a clue lol

I’m guessing that most of Pittsburgh will be condensed to Ellie with rifle and the introduction of Sam and Henry, with that wrapping up in the same episode. Episode 4 maybe? The Tommy arc should be 2 episodes considering the importance they placed on Joel getting to him in time.

We still have University where Joel gets injured and the whole David thing, and that’ll add in Left Behind. That has to be an ep and a half at least, I’d think.

I know Melanie Lynskey has a role, and the only place someone at her level fits would be Pittsburgh, so that’s maybe an additional episode there. Most of that area is gameplay specific and a bit of “getting to know ya” stuff, so they don’t need to be there long.

Apologies for the rant but I love talking about this kind of **** lol

Set in Austin ? But they filmed it in the mountains of Alberta and some small towns. They must shift to a mountain area

Yeah just the first segment (set in 2003) was in Austin. When they flash forward 20 years they are in Boston. But I think there is a cross-country journey so I'm guessing much is set in mountains and wilderness.

Definitely has a walking dead vibe but I'm optimistic it will avoid some of the pitfalls of that show. Hopefully no Glenn goes down the well episodes.

Haven't played the game, but I have read the plot synopsis of it several times over the years -- can't recall exactly everything but I have the gist of where the show should go. What I am curious to see is where in the game's storyline do they decide to end season 1, and how many seasons the show is going to plan for. I was explaining to my buddy that loves the games, that I thought it would be a bit un-Hollywood to try and capture the entire game in just one season.

Enjoyed first episode, you can definitely see how elements of that would parallel the game. Like when Joel/Sarah get separated from Tommy by the two burning cars. That must be 100% straight out of the game. My buddy said the whole 2003 storyline was essentially the tutorial portion of the video game.

Rather than TWD, isn't a more reasonable comp 28 Days Later instead? TWD are zombies, these things are just like the infected in 28DL. Also HBO >>>>>>>>> AMC, just saying that for the record.
