The pilot has aired. Karl's first waypoint is China and its Great Wall.

Slightly amusing, and as a travel show entertaining enough. KP didn't come off as particularly stupid as the title suggests (I'm not very familiar with the character/person fwiw). He asked questions any regular joe from a western culture would ask when visiting China for the first time.

The trip could've been planned better, wish they would've covered more. Props for going amidst the everyman, though.

Nothing spectacular but KP seems decent and interesting enough to keep me watching his "adventures", got a feeling it's bound to get better.

Camera work seems very good, although apparently they use some BBC archive footage for scenery and whatever, makes sense.

Gervais is a bit annoying with his laughter.

haven't seen the pilot yet, but I'm going to assume this show will be much more entertaining for people who've listened to the podcasts and are familiar with KP's personality.

saw the pilot, it's great.

favorite line: "the fish are for company right? Not some sort of appetizer?"

I like how he was really worried he might injure the kung fu instructer because he doesn't know his own strength.

I'm not sure that's the case, I think this can easily be the vehicle that brings Karl to a wider audience. It may well encourage people to seek out the podcasts and radio shows rather than the other way around.

That was brilliant. Loved that he was just sat watching a girl eat scorpions while sitting there chowing down on a bag of Monster Munch he brought with him.

You think he has kept this act up over many hundreds of hours of radio/poscasts/tv and so on over a 10 year period? You also believe that in spite of the fact that basically no one who has met him has said he was any different in person than on the shows? Do you believe his real name is Graham?

I've listened to pretty much every word he has ever recorded multiple times and in my opinion, there is basically 0.1111111111% chance he is totally an act. He plays it up a little bit at this point, especially when he is on tv, but basically the man you see is real, and he really is that stupid.

Same here, whenever I'm doing some mundane task and there is nothing else on, on goes a Gervais radio show or podcast, it's guaranteed to make me laugh at some point and that is good therapy, so I've listened to it all multiple times as well. The only thing I disagree with is the 0.1111111111%, it's way lower than that

I would also like to add I'm ashamed of the OP now, I must have had a few beers at the time, posted it in the wrong place and very little content. The link doesn't even work now. Oh dear.

Yeah the first show was absolute quailty...Just pure Karl for an hour - There have been some deleted scenes put up on youtube here:

Plus, of course, the obligatory podcasts are up on I-Tunes to go along with the show for those who missed it on sky:

Canny wait for the next episode in India...Karl is well lucky to go to these spots - Even if he doesent really enjoy himself.

Yeah, he was just cracking a joke there.

It's kinda sad that I can tell that just through his facial expressions now.

"A sort of on suite shed" then followed by "whats this one a dartboard" absolutely killed me. Although the hotel walkout scene looked staged but nevertheless the episode had plenty of funny moments.

Really enjoyable show which had me in stiches for a long time! Agreed that sometimes he seams to play up his personality in parts but his personality is what makes him funny!

I really liked the China episode, but I thought this was much better.

As much as "Karl being Karl" is entertaining, it's refreshing and entertaining to see the human side of him. You can tell he has a genuine interest - in a totally unpatronizing way - in people we call "freaks." There's a deep level of respect there that is touching.

I can't wait for the interview coming out on the Science DVD special features where he meets Warwick Davis (midget on one of the Extras episodes, and making a tv show with Ricky and Steve). There is already a little teaser clip up on Ricky's blog, and it is hilarious. Karl's face when he meets Warwick is just amazing.

Ricky's latest blog entry was quite funny too (and kinda sweet really the way he talks about Karl as his best mate):

A Confession

Some people have correctly spotted that An Idiot Abroad is totally scripted. It took ages to write too. Each episode of The Office took us about 2 months to write but they were only 30 minutes long. This show is nearly an hour so each script took us about 3 and a half months to write. Casting was a lot harder too. Just finding that indian actor that looked like Bill Oddie took 8 weeks. It was also a bit embarrassing auditioning people and asking them to wrap their ***** round a walking stick. Still, it will all be worth it when Steve and I win all the BAFTAs again for writing and directing.

I'm a lot prouder of creating the "Pilkington" character (that's not his real name, of course), than I am of David Brent probably. (Although ironically, David Brent isn't a character at all. I am just like that in real life so I didn't have to write any lines for that one. In fact I didn't realise The Office was a sitcom at the time. The BBC just came to my place of work and filmed me selling paper. I've certainly milked becoming famous off the back of that lucky break, right?)

So yeah, Karl is completely fake. When you meet him off camera he's a bit like Steven Fry. We just get him to act dim to make money. All the podcasts and audiobooks were completely scripted too. If you listen carefully you can hear us turning the pages. The good thing about those were that we didn't have to learn the lines by heart as we weren't in vision. A lot easier than in An Idiot Abroad where Karl not only has to learn the whole script but often only gets one take because we only have all those extras for a few hours.

The tricky bit is when he's interviewed on radio and TV. We have to get the presenter in on it so they ask him the right questions. Luckily every single one has gone along with it and never given the secret away. Thanks. But I just thought it was time to come clean. I'm ashamed that I ever lied to you. Sorry.

"Karl" will find it difficult getting different roles in other scripted comedies and dramas as we have typecast him so much over the last few years, so please buy the audiobooks and DVDs as he will need the money.

I'm glad the charade is over as I won't need to pretend to find my best mate funny anymore. It's hard laughing at lines you've written yourself. Obviously I don't find him funny at all and we are not really friends. Thanks for watching all this time suckers, and well done to the really smart people who knew all this all along. You got me! You are brilliant.

Ricky.
