Jack is Back? 24 returning to Fox?! Jack is Back? 24 returning to Fox?!

Thanks for bumping this. Is season 1 good right now? I didn't read whole post because I saw it last when it first came out, never rewatched, so don't want to spoil my forgetful memory. I do remember some eventful things though, namely the big spoiler near the end.

I'd like to get my wife into it during this down time.

We've gone through Homeland, Jack Reacher, whatever other shows fit that genre that aren't coming to my mind right now, and she loves them all.

lol at that long post! i read the whole thing. 24 is a guilty pleasure for me, and ive watched every episode multiple times. but i'm not sure how well season 1 would hold up, especially after already having seen it multiple times lol fml... i mean the show is 20 years old!

housenuts,

there is a british show "line of duty". it's one of the best of this genre. at least when it came out. i think season 1 is about 10 years old... i'd guess it's still pretty good though.

Definitely holds up, >>Homeland (IMO).

It’s not a show like Prison Break that is completely reliant on its twists to keep it interesting. It is a well-paced, well-acted, action-packed, thrilling show that keeps you on the edge of your seat pretty much the whole way. And, if nothing else, Jack Bauer is one of the greatest, most tragic, characters ever.

I rewatched the Craig Bond series and the Mission Impossibles recently, 24 is up there in the conversation for top of the genre.

Season 1 was great, even if it had one of the WOAT story lines with the amnesia.

Ooook on to S2. Previously on 24 (breakdown)

Could they follow it up? Or would there be a sophomore slump? Stay tuned for my season 2 breakdown.
Season 2: 8:00 AM-8:00 AM

Yes, yes it could. S1 was a groundbreaking season of television introducing a show that brought action, a constantly-evolving storyline, with twists and turns on the edge of the seat. But this was a sort of fork-in-the-road moment for the show. Would they reset the premise and just tell a completely new story? As you go through the show, treating it as one, you learn that maybe the best thing about the show is how they weave the story together. And these early seasons are the bread crumbs that lay the foundation for what the whole show is built on.

Likes:

-A broken, disheveled Jack returns to CTU. The reception he gets from his former co-workers still gives me chills. This man is a legend.

-And of course, the most famous scene from this episode.

-End of episode 1, Jack shaves off his beard, he's back. If anyone had doubts about how s2 would follow up, the first episode easily dismisses them.

-Jack re-establishes his cover by delivering the head of the witness, then gets in with the field crew by goading one of the volatile members into a fight, in which Jack easily overpowers him and breaks his ankle. "Eddie your guy's a joke"

-CTU is blown up. This did a lot. Not only did it further the notion that nobody was safe on 24, but it also developed a plot they had introduced early in the season. Jack tipped off the NSA that CTU was the target in plenty of time for it to be evacuated, but rather than going to Palmer, decided to sit on it. Differing agendas can make collaboration in government difficult.

-Jack learns Nina sold the terrorists the plans to CTU, and interrogates her. What tremendous acting by Kiefer.

-Nina gets the better of Jack, and holds him hostage, negotiating for a pardon for the murder of Jack Bauer. The look on Palmer's face when Jack asks him to make sure his daughter is safe is tremendous pain. Never fear David, Jack escapes!

-George Mason, exposed to radiation, says goodbye to his scene. Mason has a few powerful scenes in this, his farewell season. The rare character who wasn't afraid to ruffle the feathers of the heroes (Jack, Tony, Michelle) but remained likeable nonetheless.

-Kate Warner, the sister of (spoiler) soon-to-be-revealed terrorist Marie, is kidnapped by Syed Ali and tortured for information after hiring a private investigator. Once again, this is a part of what made 24 so great. Actions had (brutal) consequences. Fortunately for Kate, Jack was there to save the day.

-Marie kills Reza, her fiance, who Kate had suspected of shady business throughout the season. I've seen this season a handful of times and even knowing it's coming I still find it to be an impressive subverting of expectations. Marie plays her part while, but the show also does a good job of dropping clues as to why she may have gone down this path. The death of her mother, a rivalry/jealousy with her sister.

-Jack, with Kate's help, finally tracks down Syed Ali, and tortures him for information. After torture doesn't work he threatens the lives of Ali's children in return for the location of the bomb. This is great for a few reasons, for starters it opens the discussion that becomes a huge one on the show: do the ends justify the means? But it also is another layer added to the character of Jack Bauer, showing us his tactical ability and what he is (or isn't) willing to do for the greater good.

-Kate realizes her sister is gone.

-Jack finds the bomb, and realizes they won't be able to stop it, so someone will have to fly it out of the city. Jack decides to do it himself, calls his daughter to say goodbye, only for an already dying Mason, who snuck onto the plane, to convince him that the actual brave thing to do would be to keep on living. Unbelievable sequence, this is 24 at its best.

-Jack Bauer, seeking proof that the recording implicating multiple heads of countries behind the bomb is fake, is captured and tortured before escaping.

-President Palmer is impeached. This is further than I'm sure anyone thought this plotline would go, but once again, actions have consequences. Even though Palmer ended up being "right" from an objective POV, he was ignoring all evidence and counsel on the word of Jack Bauer.

-Kim kills Gary in self-defense. Kim didn't have a lot to do this season, they basically just had her running around doing inconsequential stuff, but this was a great moment for her. Gary was a monster, and the most important thing Kim tried to do in this season was to protect Megan from him.

-Jack Bauer proves the recording was faked in time to stop a war, and does so in the most badass of ways. GOAT

-Jack reunites with Kim, who says she's going to be there for him and take care of him. Jack smiles contently. Tears

-The terrorists actually behind the events of the day, upset there will be no war, launch plan B. The season ends on a cliffhanger.

Dislikes:

-Pretty much all Kim stuff. There's a cougar, there's Johnny Drama. Eek

That's sorta it? Any other complaints feel like super nitpicks. Of course, it's not a perfect season of tv, but it's very close to a perfect season of 24. This season is made up of everything that makes 24 great. Jack being awesome. A few great twists. Real-life commentary. Emotional.

Finally, the following characters, all of whom play an essential role in further seasons, are introduced and established:

-Michelle Dessler

RIP to the following characters

-George Mason

Final Grade: 9.5/10. Peaking

Stay tuned for my season 3 breakdown.

having fun rewatching 24. it's streaming free on imdbtv

right now they are talking about a bio terror attack in LA. it's quite dated since we all know a lot more about epidemics now lol

they said if a few people were infected in LA it would quickly spread to 100s, then thousands, then 20% of LA(2 million) would be infected in weeks. but the virus kills within 24 hours of exposure.

a virus that kills that fast would be so easy to contain

also, jack is an *******!

Nice! Glad to share it. I highly recommend all of Jon Bois' stuff. Check out "The Dumbest Boy in the World" It really hits home since it's about a message board

+1

Recently rewatched a bit of season 1. Crazy that a show can age so well on one front and so poorly on another.

Not President Palmer??

Did you know that in early 2009, Dennis Haysbert jokingly said that Barack Obama should thank him for making America comfortable with a black President?

I never watched 24 when it was on. Just saw the first episode on hulu.

Interesting.

It opened in Kuala Lumpur, with a spy transmitting info back to USA #1. I feel obligated to point out that our very own chopstick has been there for quite some time. Now we know what he's been doing on these travels.

I wouldn't have guessed that Pedro Cerrano was eligible for the Presidency, but good for him.
