It's not common knowledge among random rednecks, but it should be for contestants of the most credible game show in North America. And the fact that they add the OPEC criteria makes it a LOT easier, I'm not even sure there is any other African country in OPEC and you hear about Nigeria being oil-rich all the time.

There was a Jeopardy the other night where P1-7k P2-12k P3-27k. So there was no way the guy could lose if he didnt wager more than a few k. He wagered, half got the question wrong (The final question was 1989 Hit songs or something)and player 2 doubled up and won.

I forgot about the qualifier that it was also a member of the British Commonwealth, so it was an oil rich, large, English speaking country, and none of them were even close.

The size is obviously the best hint in that clue. There are 4 African countries in OPEC (Libya, Nigeria, Algeria and Angola) and 19 African countries that are part of the British Commonwealth. If you didn't have some knowledge of populations in Africa or were lucky enough to have memorized the OPEC nations, you're pretty screwed.

Your recollection of the scores was wrong-

http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=3244

It was P1- 13,800, P2- 15,000, P3- 26,400

Or just guess know that Nigeria had a lot of oil.

I tend to have a pretty good record when none of them get it correct on final jeopardy, though.

Didn't quite get this until I realized that you misplaced your comma. I was wondering how "half got the question wrong"...one and a half people?

Should be: "He wagered half, got the question wrong..."

If i could summarize jeopardy
they do messed up betting all the time...
they never know anything about Africa
they are "smarter" than 99% of ppl in USA when it comes to general knowledge

Poor game play by player 2, obviously the correct play for player 2 is to risk $2001, thereby allowing player 3 to risk up to $12,999. Player 3 couldn't have possibly seen Player 2 making such a huge error.

There is no way player 2 risked it all it that scenerio.

The lady that won this game did make a pretty poor daily double wager on the last daily double in Double Jeopardy. There were only a handful of questions left, and she had 7,800 compared to the leader's 26,000. She wagered 4,800.

Yeah, don't even try to get your score to more than half of your opponent with basically one category left. Keep that extra 3K just in case you get the question wrong...that will do you a lot of good. (the 2 categories with questions left were baseball and B-17 related, obv not strong categories for her as she clearly avoided them to that point.)

She did get the DD correct, and then luckboxed a baseball question (guessed Kenny Rogers due to obv. clue) and got to within striking distance and closed the deal in FJ...but still bad DD wager imo.

This reminds me of when I was younger and would watch Legends of the Hidden Temple. There's a part where they have to answer questions, and every time they do they take a step forward and after answering x questions right they win. The only catch is the questions are multiple choice, and each team answers the same question out loud and then the teams that got it right move forward. It always pissed me off when a team in 2nd place would say the same answer as the 1st place team when the 1st place team was one step away from winning it all, because you're either both wrong and you're still no better off, or you're both right and the game is over anyway.

They're just kids so it's not that inexcusable, but I was just a kid and it seemed super obvious to me that they were being stupid.

Yeah, the biggest errors are clearly in the DD wagers.

It's amazing that people use the anti-Bill Belichick logic to make such poor choices. Basically, they don't want to do anything to completely eliminate themselves from contention before the end, even if it meant giving yourself a much better chance to win.

The Air Force dude was very good at betting a lot when he needed to get ahead, and stayed on the show 5 days because of it. So many horrible errors when it comes to DD, where they bet so much it hurts them bad if they miss, but not enough to actually get an advantage from it.

yeah people's bet sizing with daily doubles is typically awful, it's funny how people who are so smart can be so stupid when it comes to gambling. the other day this chick had like 11k, leader had about 20k with two questions left, she got a daily double and she wagered 4k...

Really stupid wager big stack has 26k, small stack has 7800 and wagers 4k on a daily double. Ofc she gets it right and luckboxes a win.

Bumping for tonight's loltastic Final Jeopardy -- this isn't a wagering mistake but I couldn't find the "dumbest morons ever on Jeopardy" thread so in here it shall go:

FJ question was worded something like this: Category -- Politically Correct Pop Culture

"While the violence continues, in 2006, all depictions of this were removed from Tom & Jerry cartoons"

I guessed smoking and was right, but I'll grant that it's not the easiest question ever. Still, I remembered the cat smoking cigarettes here and there and obviously smoking has become a huge sin on TV especially for kids shows. And since the question removed violence as an answer, you could narrow down to things like smoking or sexual suggestion.

Here were the three answers given:
1) beheadings
2) shootings
3) explosions

WTF. I can barely understand even one person giving a violent answer after "THE VIOLENCE CONTINUES... BUT THIS DOES NOT" let alone all goddam three of them. Jesus where is Ken Jennings who the hell are these morons etc. hyachachacha

They could be thinking in general violence continues, but this specific type of violence does not? Obviously not a good answer since Jeopardy always tries to hint at the answer, but if you couldn't come up with anything, maybe that was a last gasp guess?

I gotta admit my mind was drifting in the direction of certain acts of violence as well. Its an awkwardly worded question and its not too hard to imagine why people would misinterpret it imo.

As an example, I could see a question being phrased like this, "While the physicality and aggression will continue, in the Olympics, you won't find much/any of this in Men's Ice Hockey..."

Spoiler:
And that would of course be fighting, which does go along with physicality and aggression.

Man, you're right that final jeopardy was brutal today. Even Trebek had a go at the women who wrote "beheadings". This is a children's cartoon lady. She should have done herself a favor and not answered the last question correctly so she could just avoid final jeopardy/humiliation.

I don't think explosions is a terrible answer. Clearly these people are mixing up their cartoons (shooting - bugs/fudd explosions - road runner/wil E.).

Wow, that is such a spot on example of a $200 question. Being a Jeopardy question (answer) writer must be an awesome job.
