Re: Idiotic Jeopardy wagers (from tonight/TLDR)

I'm sure I've mentioned this before, and this thread is totally inappropriate, but I'll tell it anyways as a huge hijack.

I was in the Jeopardy studio audience watching a college match and there is some like seven-foot-plus kid playing. Trebek is talking to these kids at the commercial break, so this is not on the air although its tough to believe there isn't some video of this, though it was back in 2000 so phone cameras weren't everywhere and surely weren't allowed anyways.

Anyways, after Trebek talks to the giant, he turns to the girl in the middle and says, "Gina, Milo is a big man, but I'm a BIIIIIIG man, if you know what I mean," and guffaws.

The studio audience reacts with shocked silence, the girl is extremely uncomfortable, and Trebek just changes the subject abruptly.

Plus its not quite the same when they're playing for charity. Celebrities are more likely to risk money in daily doubles and final jeopardy because their charities are guaranteed some money (I think first was guaranteed 50K) and you don't need to protect the win at all costs like in real jeopardy.

In Wolf's defense, it could simply have been Andy being faster on the clicker rather than straight ownage on the questions. A friend of mine who was on the show said that being first to click was much more challenging than knowing the answer.

it was both. wolf was at $600 and not answering anything. then he just went on tilt and got way in the hole.

It wasn't the buzzer, you get way into the negatives by being an idiot, not by missing your buzzes.

this could have been true if it wasn't for Wolf's negative score. FFS I've never seen a score that far below zero...

I didn't read much into the negative score. He still had a slim shot at getting second. What's the downside to ringing in to every question that close to the end and hoping you luckbox an answer?

The downside is looking foolish when answering Jerusalem for where Jesus grew up when you worked in Israel for years. These weren't 2k dollar questions he was choking on.

Re: Idiotic Jeopardy wagers (from tonight/TLDR)

I'm thinking that a lot of FJs end up with all 3 getting it right, or all 3 getting it wrong. I could be mistaken, but the probability of that happening should be counted as well.

It's my understanding that all 3 people know the answers to most of the questions during the show and it's buzzer speed that differentiates them. Perhaps it's different for final jeopardy.

Today's scores:

P1: $20000
P2: $10800
P3: $1200(?)

P2 gets the Daily Double with the last response.
Wager?

$1000. He misses and has no shot in FJ.

Re: Idiotic Jeopardy wagers (from tonight/TLDR)

Just watched that and noticed how awful it was, and I'm usually pretty bad at math and didn't get a lot of what was going on ITT. Even if he isn't comfortable with the category just bet 500 or something so you still have a prayer.

Also, current champ has been running like god by facing these types of idiotic wagers.

Re: Idiotic Jeopardy wagers (from tonight/TLDR)

I like the go for a tie suggestion in this case as well. I think he should have bet 800 and missed it, intentionally if necessary.

If it's not quite the last question then betting everything but a dollar (so you can play final jeopardy at least) is the way to go.

edit: nevermind, I'm dumb. If he feels confident in the category then it's obviously better to bet all but a buck. If he does not feel confident though then he probably is best betting 800 and getting it wrong.

What are the correct wagers? I think that both p1 and p2 should have wagered 0.

p3 wagered 0 and got it right, which looked dumb until p2 bet it all and was wrong. Don't remember what p1 wagered, think it was around 5K which would have given p3 the win had p1 gotten it wrong too.

Also p1 is the most unimpressive 5 day champ I have ever seen on that show ever.

I think 0 for p3 is the way to go. Why do you think it's dumb? Or do you just mean because he got it right? Finishing with 4800 is only better than 2400 if they wager between 4,800 and 7,199 and I don't know why they would ever do that. It seems like they'd either go all or nothing most of the time, or at least that's what they should do.

For p1 or p2 I think it comes down to the category. I'm putting 9,600 if I feel very confident and 0 if I don't. I don't think you can count on the other guy also putting 0, especially if it's an easy category.

Re: Idiotic Jeopardy wagers (from tonight/TLDR)

P3 needs to bet a few hundred. There is a chance that a big stack will bet such that they have slightly more than 2400 if they get it wrong, meaning that P3 must get it right in order to beat them. OTOH, there is no way either big stack bets so much that they end up with slightly less than 2400, as that would just be stupid as P3 wouldn't have to get it correct to pull ahead anymore. But that's fine point, as a smart player in big stack would either want their stack to end up just above 4,800 or close to zero (which they did).

Not a wager, but the guy that was on last night was a dead ringer for Nick Swardson, the stalker guy from Blades of Glory and the one in Grandma's Boy who had sex with the old lady.

Also not a wager, but holy **** did those people embarrass themselves with their complete lack of knowledge of the size of African countries. The question was something like 'Name this African member of OPEC with a population of over 150 million', and these idiots guessed Botswana (2 million), Kenya (40 million) and Morocco (32 million). I mean, really, these people made it past the initial tests?

That's exactly what I thought. Made watching the show twice as awesome.

Is this common knowledge? I had no clue that Nigeria had by far the highest population in Africa before googling it.
