Re: Idiotic Jeopardy wagers (from tonight/TLDR)

posting the question again because no one has any idea what we are talking about :

Quote:
(just saw this on a rerun)

you're in last place with 6200, and your opponents have 9500 and 19200. you have control with 1 question left, and the last clue of double jeopardy is a daily double.

what's the correct amount to bet?

i believe you are just reading the question wrong? we have a daily double THEN final jeopardy. not just FJ.

i assumed this was the case but your figures were just bizarre and didn't tie in with this assumption.

Ok. I still feel alot of the discussion in this thread is ignoring a few important factors (I should add i kinda just scrolled thru it and i`m kinda drunk). In many scenarios the right amount to bet deviates from the logical amount to bet.

Just an extreme example could be a situation where player 1 has 1000, player 2 has 1000 and player 3 has 20000. the right amount to bet for player 3 can be both the full amount or nothing(If the goal obviously is to win as much money as possible(this also taking into factor potensial earnings in future programs) and not just to win). This is solely dependant on what frequency player 3 feels he will get the last question right. And how often he thinks the other players will get it right. In this situation P3 obviously have to have the right answer close to 100 % for it to be right to bet the full amount.

Prob alot of drivel above but whatever......

Re: Idiotic Jeopardy wagers (from tonight/TLDR)

I couldn't get through the entire thread, but the absolute worst of the worst when it comes to idiotic game show contestants, bar NONE, are these imbeciles on The Price is Right:

Bob: "It's a beautiful Lazyboy. Closest to the actual price without going over wins."
Marcy: "$1200"
Steve: "$650, Bob."
Nicole: "$1095"
Janet: "$1096!!"

Then Janet jumps up and down like a maniac because she feels she has strategerized better than the others.

I used to pretend to go to school, wait til my parents left, sneak back into the house, and lie around watching crap like this all day. I was like ten or eleven, and I was so eager to become an adult, because I was so convinced all the adults in the world must be absolute chimps if this was the way they played on game shows, and that i would go on to someday rule the world.

We shalll see if I was right.

Agree. We should start a Idiotic Price is Right contestants thread. One of the stupidest things people do is during a game like One Right Price. The prize is 2 identical (except for color) dirt bikes. Choices:

$5,998
$6,845

I believe that about 2/3 of the time the contestant will choose $6,845. If you watch The Price is Right as much as myself, you will know what I am talking about and how frustrating it is.

Awesome.
Andy finished with $68,000 after Final Jeopardy. I think this was the highest total I've ever seen in a single episode. Does anyone remember someone earning more?

Wolf Blitzer's answers were soooo stupid that he actually seemed like a caricature from the SNL Celebrity Jeopardy.

I tried to come up with a more subtle example, but yes, you're right.

My point is that you don't need to know game theory to know that if the test is to get close without going over, putting your estimate at just under the highest bid, well, it's not a good strategy.

I mean, in a way, it's genuinely frightening to think that the people driving their car at 75 mph on the interstate next to you are really this stupid.

In another way, it's just plain funny.

But mostly frightening.

Someone at CNN should absolutely be fired for allowing an asset like Wolf Blitzer go on TV and make a complete ass of himself. His suck even made Drudge.

I don't like the guy so this news delights me.

I'm not surprised Richter killed. Conan's bright and Andy is his boy so it figures he's sharp. Plus comedians have a ton of free time and consuming news/trivia is pretty essential to their work.

Well, here's how it actually went down:

They all got it WRONG. Here is what they bet and what they wound up.

P1: $4,799 >>> $1
P2: $13,000 >>> $800
P3: $11,900 >>> $100

They totally handed it to P2 by making horrible wagers. Had either of them made rational bets they would have won easily. Notice how P3 sort of understands that leaving herself with something if she gets it wrong is good but ultimately decides on $100 for some reason that I'm sure made sense to her at the time. I expect this kind of **** on The Price is Right, but Jeopardy contestants should really know better.

You say that P3 can/should bet anywhere between 0-2399, which P3 does. You also say that they could have won easily, but that's just not true, because it ignores whether they answer the question right, which they didn't.

I think P2 bet "wrong", which (ironically) allowed himself to win. Clearly P2 doubted his/her opponents' abilities more than he believed in his own.

3,400 is the right bet, imo. If you get it, you force the leader to bet 0 in final Jeopardy to guarantee a win, so you can bet it all and get the tie and give it another go in the next episode.

This. I mean, where's the upside, you're either going to do as expected by being the news guy beating a couple of entertainers, or you're going to have an epic failure. I just watched it on youtube, and man, that was some epic failure, they toss up softballs on celebrity jeopardy and he still struck out horribly.

to be somewhat fair to wolf blitzer, this celebrity jeopardy seemed much harder than usual - i normally turn celebrity jeopardy off, but i was actually getting some of the questions wrong so i figured i'd stick with it. unfortunately what this probably means is that they're going to have to go back to questions a reasonably intelligent 12 year old knows the answer to.

i'm also prepared to make some grand statement about how newspeople process information versus how comedians do it.

I definitely missed a few and I can accept that. However, Wolf guessing annotated on the "3-E" question after 'edited' and 'excerpt' were guessed was pretty bad.

It would have been awesome if he would have somehow missed the final jeopardy question after they scored him positive. Losing money on the Julia Child(s) answer was pretty nitty however imo.

Ritcher should also write his charity a check for the $399 he stiffed them

Watch part 2 between 4:55 and 6:30 for Wolf's greatest hits. It culminates in his best moment at 6:15 when the clue asks for a 5 letter word that describes a crash and Wolf answers "What is a crash?".

It was hilarious because Andy did a piece on The Tonight Show where they showed the practice game, and even in that they showed Wolf failing miserably. The entire piece was basically making fun of him.

This is probably true, but I'm much more impressed with how well Andy did then how ****ty Wolf did.

I remember Norm MacDonald almost winning a million (he walked away with 500 grand because Regis talked him out of answering the last question). I just enjoy seeing people that most people think are probably stupid (or goofoffs) clean up on these shows.
