Sorry to keep throwing out personal anecdotes, but this happened in a game I played as well. About six or seven clues after a controversial answer, the judges stopped the game and ruled the contestant incorrect. They just retaped Alex saying "I'm sorry, that's incorrect" and on TV it appeared smooth.
During the break, I protested that I did not have a chance to answer the question, which I should have if the answer was incorrect, and thought that a new question should be tossed out to myself and the other opponent. Furthermore, because they just acted as if the time ran out on the question, it appeared as if myself and the other remaining contestant were really stupid for not getting what was a really obvious answer (I don't remember what it was, but it was easy).
The judges said that this is their standard procedure for such situations, but obviously it's still an EV screwing not to get an opportunity to answer a question that an opponent answers incorrectly.
