^^^^this is why Jeopardy has been on the air for decades. As for some of the comments that the loss of Trebek would end the show, highly unlikely. As long as the new host possesses the same intellect for facts, combined with a good hosting presence, the show should carry on.

I used to watch every night, the Watson show was the first time in 10 or so years. It hasn't changed much.

Very impressed with the AI, especially the funky answers it emulated from some wacky contestants from past shows. I was hoping the last FJ wager by Watson would have been a Clavin style, followed by a "Who are 3 people who have never been in my kitchen?"

In a practice match it topped that. This is from an article that somehow tries to tie together Watson with the suggestion that IBM should now focus their efforts on poker instead of Jeopardy, but this part was hilarious.

The clue, in the category "Rhyme Time," was "A hit below the belt." Though this was just a practice round, held years before the public man-vs.-machine challenge that airs this week, Watson was dealing with authentic game-show material. Back in 1992, when human contestant Marty Brophy saw that $200 stumper in a broadcast episode, he correctly replied, "What is low blow?" The state-of-the-art AI, by contrast, scanned its elephantine database of documents and came up with something else: "What is wang bang?"
I'm guessing further down the list it had "dick kick", "ball maul", "clit hit", etc. But really just the fact that it would understand a rhyme is called for, and what words rhyme with each other, along with the fact that below the belt generally refers to the groin area (and not the knees or ankles for example, or the pants zipper) is all very impressive to me.

Wang bang should have been allowed if someone answered it for real imo.

whoa, i for one never said Jeopardy! would go off the air without Trebek. The show works, its awesome. I just think it would be "wrong" to see anyone else do it - perhaps someone out there can master it as well as he did.

I could see ratings going down without him, though.

Spoiler:
If only she would have bet it all on her super easy Daily Double..ugh...

(the gist of the clue was "taking something with this means to be skeptical...origin is a Roman recipe for an antidote to poison")

The guy deserved to win though, he showed big balls on his Daily Double and on Final Jeopardy, especially with wild card berths in play. He probably accurately assessed his high probability of getting these questions right.

I can't believe he was the only one that got Final Jeopardy right. That is something that probably almost no adult contestant would miss. The parents were probably screaming inside their heads.

(Final Jeopardy was something like "a piece of specialized equipment called 'Phoenix' was important in a major event in this country", category was events of 2010.)

As somebody else pointed out, I think she goofed massively in betting anything at all. $24k has gotta be a near lock to be a top 4 non winning score. However, even $14k has a reasonable shot at moving on.

Also, yeah, she's cute, but I've finally reached the age where the firstt response is "hmm, maybe in a few years."

EDIT: Oh, and re: FJ, my wife totally whiffed on it and she's often stronger at FJ than I am.

minor spoiler

Spoiler:
hmmm...maybe the final jeopardy clue is harder than i thought, it could just have seemed really easy since the word phoenix seemed to be coming up a lot, even with people who weren't following closely, and i wasn't even paying that much attention

but that experience could be more localized to me and my social group than i thought

i was chalking it up to teens generally not giving a damn about current events...i sure didn't, especially if they were in a foreign country. i still don't care THAT much, but when you're older, that is what older people are talking about, so you just absorb it

agree she might have overbet on fj, i do not have a real good feel for what kind of scores go through though

just watched. it was cute how she kept dancing any time they played some music. i hope she moves on.

i didn't follow the miners thing that closely, though i did keep track of it and i don't recall ever hearing the word 'phoenix'. i was racking my brain thinking 'er ok what major stuff happened in october?' and couldn't come up with anything

I had absolutely no idea what the final jeopardy was talking about, I was thinking some halloween thing

All I remember about that incident was making a joke about brad chilly and minors

took me a second to figure it out, but then i thought:

phoenix --> rise from earth --> what event dealt with rising from earth --> oh, of course

Teen Jeopardy is always level one thinking, so all you had to do was come up with the foreign news story that got the most coverage last year. The miner stuff dominated the news, all the extra clues just were gravy
