Congratulations and condolences, Ryan.

Condolences on the Cowboys fan thing, ofc. Next year they'll be back with Dak.

Hope you ended up with a nice long run. Continued good luck.

I hope Ryan chose not to tune into this Washington Football Team game.

Good job, Ryan.

As another former Jersey guy, I applaud your abandonment of NY teams.

Even though New England has been my home for 50 years, I will forgive you for your mispronunciation of Bangor. It took me decades to learn it rhymes with "Al Gore"

Wow extremely impressive so far Ryan!! Love the way you wiped the smug look off Gabriel’s face with that big DD wager! That guy was definitely quick on the buzzer but I think it burned him a few times. Seems like a big part of your successful run so far is your high correct response rate. You don’t seem to miss any at all when you ring in, hope you kept it going!

I totally zoned on Ryan since I was watching in speed mode catching up. Then I heard the poker player and it clicked. Very nice.

Anyone want to spoil Friday fOr me? ABC station did not carry due to football.

Spoiler:
it was close in the latter part of the game. Smug guy Gabriel, see comment above, hit first DJ DD and only wagered like 1/3 stack. Got it right. Few clues later Ryan hit DD and wagered 9k of a 10k stack. Got it right. FJ was like 18k Ryan, 14k Gabe, 12k 3rd. My numbers could be off.

Last alphabetical landlocked equatorial African country. Ryan was the only one who got it right.

FJ was

Uganda. Both others guessed Zimbabwe

Thanks for the support guys! Gabe was an absolute machine on the buzzer (and then Chandy started heating up in the Double Jeopardy round). Thought for sure I was going to end up losing that game, but managed to find that key Daily Double and pull it out.

Good job Ryan!

Unfortunately, I'm probably not the only one who missed your second and third appearances because of NFL/NCAAF games on national TV on Thursday and Friday.

Congratulations, Ryan, well done!

If you're up for it, I'd be interested in a review of your experience.

+1 Nice work. It was fun following your play. I'm guessing you'll still qualify for this season's TOC because, as far as I remember, you're the second player to win 4 games (and nobody has won 5 games or more yet). Perhaps some clarification from you on this?

I'm not sure if others experienced this, but on Ryan's bust out game yesterday, the double jeopardy round was a black screen with no audio for several minutes for me (I saw less than half of the questions). Did others experience this?

That sucks. We're lucky here in RI. It's on CBS, but when a national broadcast preempts it, it just bounces over to a local cable channel.

Starting this season, Jeopardy moved from our local NBC affiliate to FOX. Unfortunately that’s the only one of the 4 major networks that doesn’t have a second broadcast channel here. Also airs at 2PM now which is alright with me but probably not ideal for people working regular jobs.

During yesterday’s FJ I was wondering how badly I would have misspelled Mediterranean..

madlex,

No problems here (Denver). I subscribe to Dish (at least for now), which means I might lose Fox tonight (the two of them are having another pissing match over fees).

Thanks eveyone! For anyone that missed episodes, depending on your station last week's shows may be airing as Saturday reruns in the coming weeks.

As far as the ToC goes, you can see the current tracker here (the one on Jeopardy's official website is not updated with me on there yet). I'm currently in 9th out of 13 open spots (2 spots are held for College / Teachers tournament winners). Zack Newkirk was last season's defending champion, so whenever he is able to return he only needs to win one more game to pass me, but 4 more people would have to win 5 games (or win more money in 4 games) to bump me off the list. Hopefully that doesn't happen, but with the uncertainty around COVID and the new hosting situation, who knows when the next tournament may be (might not be until Fall 2021). Fingers crossed that I hold on and get the call to come back!

Happy to answer any questions about my experience. I'll also be on the LATB Pokercraft podcast (and possibly some others as well) to talk about it in the near future.

Ryan,

Congrats on the nice run! Just a few questions...

1. Did you have a sense that Alex was nearing the end of his journey?

2. Do you happen to know how many times you rang in and answered incorrectly? I can only recall seeing it once or twice. Your percentage of correct responses had to be incredibly high!

3. How long had you been trying to get on the show?

I could definitely tell he was struggling a bit when we weren't filming, but he seemed to be in good spirits. He was still sharp mentally and cracking jokes during breaks. I honestly thought he was going to at least make it through this season, so his passing was a real shock to me.

Looking through J! Archive, it looks like I rang in and answered incorrectly exactly once in each of my five games (plus also answered incorrectly on the last Daily Double and in Final Jeopardy in my last game). I was trying to stay off the buzzer on clues I was unsure of unless I fell behind, though that might have hurt me a bit in some games (not ringing in for Fremont in game 3 is the one that sticks out to me the most).

I did the College test my sophomore, junior and senior years. I then took the online test a few times on and off my first few years out of college, and have taken it every year for the past 5 years. This was the first year that I made it through to an audition, as they were only accepting candidates within driving distance to the studio due to COVID. There were a few contestants from Norcal, Vegas and Arizona during my two days of filming, but no one further than that.

Ryan do you regret any of your dd or fj bidding? Did you feel you played better after getting used to being up there? Where does being a 4 time jeopardy champ rank in your lifetime accomplishments/greatest moments?

Definitely don't regret any of the FJ bets, think they were all optimal (or at least in the optimal range). Had the lead in every game before my last one, so I bet to cover 2nd place in those, and then in the final game I bet the minimum needed to force T.J. to wager and come up with a correct response.

Only DD bet I regret is my last one. At the time, scores were T.J. with $14,200, me with $13,800 and Denise with $7,600, and there was just one clue worth $2k remaining on the board. I ended up betting $5k, which was a bit too much. Optimal probably would have been $2401, which would have been the minimum needed to guarantee a lead going into FJ if I responded correctly. Ended up not mattering, since I got both that clue and FJ wrong

I think so to some extent. In terms of getting in first on the buzzer, my last game was statistically the best. I definitely felt a lot more comfortable my last two games (which were filmed a day after my first three), though that may be because I was operating on < 2 hours of sleep on the first day.

In terms of accomplishments, this is pretty easily #1 IMO. Came close to winning a bracelet in 2010, and somewhat close again in 2014. If I had managed to seal the deal one of those times it might have rivaled this experience. In terms of moments, I'd rank it just below my wedding

Thanks. 2020 was definitely a tough year, but at least I got to close it out on a high note. Hope our Cowboys can make a run next year when Dak is back (assuming they sign / franchise tag him in the offseason).

Ryan,

How surprised were you when the Mohawk guy rallied back after starting so slowly? Do you think you maybe underestimated him? I know I sure did, I really thought your 5th win was academic halfway through the single Jeopardy round.
