We spent all this time trying to figure out what the recipe for a loss would be, and we never considered: a PAIR of opponents to contend with. That 3rd-place guy was no slouch, either.

(I typed that before Trebek gave us this stat: all three combined for *one* missed clue in the entire game...and before that impossibly difficult FJ that ALL THREE NAILED! It took a perfect storm. GG, Champ!)

Yeah, whatever mod was deleting spoiler tagged posts earlier had the right idea, but unfortunately it was too late to save me. For one thing Tapatalk doesnt hide spoilered text in thread previews if you have them on, and besides that it's pretty obvious what's going on when several people start posting spoil tags all of a sudden or when you say "today's episode has been spoiled in a bunch of places" as if that would even be news unless it went a certain way. FFS guys there's no prize for being the first to post it here and the thread title is pretty clear. Of course after I was spoiled here I was randomly surfing Twitter and saw a retweet of James himself spoiling it before the episode aired, so meh.

re. the game

i) Should Emma shove her second daily double?
ii) What did y'all think of FJ?

Sorry to see him go but he had an epic run. Both challengers were really good but he seemed off of his buzzer game. I have little doubt he knew all of the answers but was getting beat way too often on the buzzer at least more than normal. That means he missed both DDs in DJ which meant he didn't have his customarily unsurmountable lead.

I don't think he got anything wrong? He just didn't get in quick enough which has been one of his biggest strengths. He seemed unbeatable on the buzzer, especially since he has so much experience with it at this point which is a huge edge. I always figured his downfall would come from a wrong answer on a big DJ bet but that didn't happen. He got beat on the buzzer. That new champ seems legit though. It will be interesting to see if now that he is gone that strategy reverts to the past where everyone bets way too small.

James ran into a perfect storm. First clue DD in SJ, not getting a single DD in DJ, and both opponents being very good at trivia AND good at the buzzer. A Masters thesis on Jeopardy FTW!

Watching live I thought Emma's 2nd DD bet was too small. I was expecting her to bid in the $8k+ range to essentially shut the door. In reflection, who knows, maybe she wasn't that confident in the category and had more confidence in her ability to buzz in before James in other categories (which she did, often)

Was this the first time in a taped recording we're seen Trebek's cancer mentioned?

I held out for over 24 hours and didn't post until the seal was broken.
Still, apologies to those harmed.

It's been in mainstream news since Sunday night. So spoilers here shouldn't be that big of a deal.

James FJ wager was the exact amount he could bid and still win if he+Emma got it wrong and 3rd place got it right. Interestingly in this scenario, Emma could have bid 0 and won regardless. But of course, James expects her to make the play of wagering enough to beat him by 1 if he goes all in, which she did.

I think she should have shoved on the second DD. I defended Nate the other day when he made a less than all-in bet, but in his case (a) he was outplaying James to that point, (b) his bet was large enough to still give him a substantial lead that was likely to hold up, and (c) there was another DD left on the board, which could've given him a shot at coming back after a miss if he left a decent stack behind to double.

On the other hand, (a) she was being outplayed and only had the lead due to the first DD, (b) she gave herself almost no margin for error even after getting it correct, and (c) on a miss she would've had to outplay James straight up the rest of the way without and any more DDs. On that last point, she surprisingly nearly did. James wasn't anywhere near his usual dominant self after that, so that was near a best case scenario for her, but he still did gain ground and almost catch her. If you replayed that scenario 10 times, I bet he wins most of them due to her conservative bet.

At time Emma got 2nd DD
There was $13,200 in clues left after the DD
She led $20.4 to $17.8
Clue was Political Philosophies for $2000

edit:
Miscounted, 13.2 left on the board not 18.2

^ Based on that information it certainly makes $3k seem low

edit - after edit above (13.2k left on board rather than 18.2k), 3k feels more reasonable

James had been outplaying the 2 challengers by only a little bit, so he probably has claim to 7K of that 13k. That puts James at 24.8K going to final. If emma figures to get 3K of the remaining, she needs to get to 21.8K min after the DD.
So any bet at all over about 2K is in line to be good.
Turns out, James got 5.6K, Jay got 3.6K, and Emma got 3.2K.

Yeah, mea culpa. I was trying to warn folks that spoilers were out there, but I didn't consider that even their existence was a spoiler of something big, meaning it had to be the record or a loss

I apologise.
