According to Ken Jennings they also don't let you wager 69

His shoutout on Friday (to Tuesday) was directed to a 2p2er, so that would be cool if it was the last one.

Did he earnestly mispronounce gyro or is that a classic high brow jeopardy gag?

Ordinarily, I would be in the go for the gusto camp. but a double up didn't even get her to half of James. A>>>>B for the rest of your life.
Someone with the brains to go for it would think about it like this.

A-
Person X: "You were on Jeopardy?"
Robin: "Indeed I was!"
X: "How did you do?"
R: "With 7 clues left facing a DD I had a chance to beat Holzhauer when he was s__tpumping everyone for months. So I went for it, missed the DD, and finished 3rd."
X: "Oh man, that's a bad break! But at least you went for it".

OR
B-
Person X: "You were on Jeopardy?"
Robin: "Uhm, I'd rather not talk about it"
X: "How did you do?"
R: "I had a chance to beat Holzhauer when he was s__tpumping everyone for months. But I pussed out on a DD in a great category for me and protected 2nd place."
X: (thinks in his head) "This chick is odd and a loser, move along."

Case in point, many years ago I coached an ex GF when she was on Jeopardy. With a few clues left, she was way behind a buzzer maven, but then found the last DD. She wagered a huge sum, enough to give her a chance if correct, enough to guarantee 3rd if incorrect. Unfortunately she could not pull the answer. No regrets from either of us. As Herm Edwards says, you play to win the game.

Jeopardy has always advised contestants not to add any extraneous information to FJ. They ignored to rogue few that did so. Now they are simply enforcing a rule that was already in place. This is Jeopardy, not WoF or FF.

Regarding the extra $1k math decision being discussed, I have a scenario for you from classic WWTBAM.

You have $250k and are facing the $500k question. You are 95% sure of the answer. If correct, you have $500k and a look at the $1MM question. If incorrect, you leave with $32K. You have a 50/50 chance of knowing the $1MM question.

The math is easy. What do you do?

This is the mistake in your thinking

EDIT: nevermind I'm sleepy. This question would be way more interesting if the probability of being correct was 50% instead of 90%. Freerolling the million dollar question is yuge tho so it's still an easy go for it if you're not poor.

irrelevant side question:

Does this mean you know in advance the question will be heads or tails, and you only have a 50% chance of getting it right,

or does it mean 50% of the time the question will be something you don't know the answer to, and 50% of the time it will be something you know the answer to 100%.

Bank the $250k. Personally $500k wouldn't do nearly as much for me as $250k v. $32k would. Mathwise I don't know, but it shouldn't be a strictly math question.

Precisely!

But I do not agree with some of the life EV statements upthread. This is wanted I wanted to point out to some who posted about the challenger's decision not to try the long shot to win the Jeopardy game.

Now, if $1k is a huge deal to her, for whatever reason, then I can get behind her decision. But chances are this is not the case. And chances are she had zero clue what she was doing from an EV point of view.

So in order to beat a seemingly unbeatable player, she had to give up a very small slice of EV, the monetary value of which is probably immaterial. But the life EV would be huge. She could have been the next Nancy Zerg. And even though Zerg lost her next game, she will always be remembered as the one who knocked off KJ.

Let's be real though... how much life EV has Nancy Zerg gained from that other than having a cool story at dinner parties?

finally caught an episode with James today - ofc he misses is first response and goes to -1000 right away.

tight game - other guy was really good - prolly has about a 40% chance vs James in a random game

What is the difficulty level of FJ supposed to be? Can it be anywhere on the clue dollar value spectrum?

Lol, before reading your final sentence I was thinking, who the **** is Nancy Zerg? If you think she's a hugely memorable figure who's gained any real life EV from her accomplishment, I think you're mistaken.

So if youre playing poker and the pot is ONLY $1k, you should just call with the bluff catcher because glory

I called with an A high once because I thought I had reasonable odds and I won. Live poker. Between the confusion from the dealer trying to figure out what my hand actually was and the disgust from the player who failed his bluff it was massively +entertainment EV. I think +cash EV also but it was close.

I feel that if the other guy had a good buzzer strategy, he had a shot to beat James this game. He just kept mashing buzzer repeatedly which is clearly not a good strategy.

He was still very very close and it shows that you need good knowledge base + aggressiveness in DD and it is probably possible to beat him.

Should've went ai on that last DD. Maybe save a dollar to stick around for the FJ for the experience.

The other guy was a masher but he was still pretty good on the buzzer compared to most others vs James. It was too close for comfort. James didn't look like he had FJ either. Good poker face I guess.
