any SE reg would run their sports categories like 95% of the time, they're not hard at all. even if you don't follow the sport, it's still usually the big names/big teams. but that's the beauty of Jeopardy, because hell if I know anything about literature or like pre-20th century history.

I doubt it, based on addition of the "r" sound. I've seen someone get counted wrong with "Vaclav Hakel" (pronounced like hokkel) when the correct response was "Vaclav Havel".

If you said something like Hay-visham or Havvis-ham I bet it would count.

g-bebe, did you catch this past Monday's episode? They had an entire category on the Anheuser-Busch Brewery! Jimmy from the Clue Crew even stood right in front of the bar where your punk ass drank underage and I got ID'd!

No, it looks like he did the proper thing and bet 4K or any amount that would allow him to win if both he and the first place guy got the question wrong.

Not only this, but how did NO ONE get it? I am terrible at Jeopardy and I knew that question immediately and I would have wagered a lot of money that the black guy would have lollerskated right through it.

Last week, they asked for one of the three states that had fewer people than Alaska. I was surprised at the answer. Not only was my first instinct incorrect, but so was my second. None of the contestants could come up with one, either.

My friend and his grown son, neither very educated, were over to watch the game the other night, and I popped that question on them. They somehow managed to guess about 40 states without hitting any of the correct three.

Spoiler:
WY, ND, and VT.

i am good at jeopardy and mentally filed through around 100 countries worldwide. just didn't think of either of those. it's a question that you really can't get a grip on - either you know it right away, or you're searching the entire world for an acceptable answer.

did anyone catch the guy purposely stalling at the end of the game, though? that was a pro move.

I read an interview with Trebeck and he said it really gets him upset when people do that. I noticed it too and was really pulling for the Granny Nanny at that point. You could see he was ticked when she nailed that final $2K clue.

Jonathon seems awesome. He also posts on the Jeopardy forums. Also they said there is another answer, Mali and Malawi. Not sure what would have happened if someone said it.

Would have liked to have seen my man Roger Craig take on the IBM machine.

Actually, I'd rather see him take on Jennings.

They have judges that will make an immediate ruling if the contestant says something correct but that is different from what is on Trebek's card. Then they will retape that part so it looks smooth. With respect to Mali/Malawi I think they would have taken an answer that is immediately verifiable as correct.

If a correct answer gets past that and the contestant ends up losing, they will have the person come back on the show. It's extremely rare for this to happen, but that is their policy. This is from a Jeopardy! book I got years ago, so it might have changed since then. An example of something that might trigger this would be if the clue said "This is the only man to have done x" and the contestant is a PhD in the subject and names someone really obscure who also did x.

I don't understand why they don't just play through the entire board and then edit it down to a half hour. I'm sure you could just edit out some of the patter and pauses if you needed to, or you could just remove the contestant interviews, which are the most worthless two minutes on television.

if they don't finish the board, Jeopardy doesn't have to pay out as much money...

I heard a rumour on another internet message board that the categories for the Jennings/Rutter/Watson matchup are going to be:

Yeah I noticed that too. With one category left, he's like "ummm, I guess... I'll take... (category)... for 1200".
