The best advice against optimal players is to bid a bit high if you are first. You want to be high enough no one wants to outbid you by 1, but low enough to get as much as possible. With ideal play, the last person always bid $1.
I meant that 97% for the person bidding last, not the 1st/2nd/3rd bidders.

Agree 100%

I still wonder if they go out of their way to match expertise wrt category names/content.

I was on the Price is Right last month. When you are in bidder's row it is very hard to hear what the other people are bidding and you can't see either. Unless you ask Drew, you probably don't even know what the bids are.

Brag: I got up on stage.
Beat: Lost a very winnable game (The Shell Game).
Beat: Spun over on the wheel.

In that case, it's 100%.

They have never done that, it would be illegal to do so. All categories are chosen randomly.

I signed a non-disclosure so I can't really discuss details until the show airs in late October. Although, I could answer general questions. I'll post in the Low Content thread.

WOW. Really, Roger? I'm assuming he was thinking of the Blackhawks. What an easy FJ for any sports fan.

Lady was smart, but she definitely luckboxed quite a bit with an easy DD question (nice $5,000 wager) and having a "Sports and The Media" FJ (she is a sportswriter). Making $200k is awesome, but I'm sure Roger is pretty upset he missed this one.

Add:

Final Jeopardy question: On Feb. 8, 2010, the headline in a major newspaper in this city read, "Amen! After 43 years, our prayers are answered."

Answer: New Orleans

So they pretty much asked who won the Super Bowl, nice to see that Jeopardy still has their sports questions set to Teen Jeopardy difficulty.

lol, based on this thread I specifically tuned in today just to watch this new guy who's supposedly revolutionizing the way Jeopardy is being played, and of course he fails on a question that even I would've gotten right.

They claim they do not do this, and I'm sure given the game show antics of the past they don't. Even if they were going to rig it, putting a sportsmanship category as described is so obvious it seems more likely to be crazy coincidence.

did they seriously have a 'sports & the media' final jeopardy question when one of the contestants was a sportswriter?

Oh wow. I kinda liked the girl in the beginning then she makes the nut-worst double jeopardy bet (5k of a 11k stack with half the board gone in double jeopardy and Roger at 22k) and I was rooting hard for Roger.

How the **** did BOTH men **** this question? I don't follow football at all but the question was so ridiculously easy. It just sounds like they both picked random cities, too.

Also, I still don't understand what "DD fishing" is. Isn't the probability of the DD being on the next item of the same category the same as that of it being on a random tile in a different category?

EDIT: Blue Celery, I thought it was ridiculous too but when you see the question, they really had no excuse. Hell, she was shocked Roger didn't get it. This should have been one of those ones where everyone gets it. And I thought they all did, considering they were all taking their sweet time looking at the camera looking confident.

ya hated her bet, but not sure what a good bet here is tbh. If halfway decent at category probably just all you can eat.

i'm guessing "DD Fishing" is going for the 3/4/5th rows in each column. for example, if the values are $200/400/600/800/1000, you'd choose the 600/800/1000 answers. i don't think i've ever seen a DD in the 200/400 rows.

If DD's do exist in the 400 (or 800 in DJ) answers, they are rare. I want to say I've seen one before but I could just be making it up. IMO 600/800 (1200/1600) are the best squares to go for, because I think the producers don't want to make the 1000/2000 answers more valuable relative to the rest.

They are more rare, but exist:

http://j-archive.com/ddstats.php?season=26 Only 11/224 last season were there.

Unbelievable. I turned to Ms. accobra_kid as they're writing their answers, and said "I would be shocked if any of the three missed this question".

This question was such a gimme, too. I remember one of the more recent times they had a Sports category in Final Jeopardy, it asked a question which was significantly more difficult. Something along the lines of the same city holding more than one pro sports trophy at the time, answer was Pittsburgh (hockey + football at the time).
