Yeah, this is an absolute huge mistake and is quite common. People would rather not lose than do something that will guarantee them a win. It's especially sad when they do it at the end of games and it's known where they will be, and they make a bet that both doesn't help them if they get it right and hurt them badly if they miss it.

Great point Tom.

I found a paper about TPIR bidding strategies.

http://arno.uvt.nl/show.cgi?fid=73060

It references another paper that I can't find the full text of that has the optimal strategy. It appears that my intuition of the first person wanting to bid pretty high, and the last person betting $1 is correct. Each player bids a bit lower than the other, until the last one bids $1.

not jeopardy, but game show network shows old card sharks real late at night. Guy gets an ace as his first card, next card is a 9, and then he chooses to freeze. Dumbest ****ing play ever.

It's been a while since I saw that show. What is the point of that part of the game?

Is this just because the risk is so low at this point (as opposed to doing it on like the fourth card)?

Guess a survey question (like Family Feud), see cards, guess whether next is higher or lower. I believe they keep the base card (in his case, the ace which is always high), meaning him freezing on the next card is literally pointless other than I believe if he got it wrong the other player gets to play their board. Not sure on that though.

When you freeze, you can replace your base card, right?

To win you need to get through 5 cards, right?

Can't believe I don't remember this game that well knowing how many old game shows I used to watch.

Yeah that show used to be my favorite as a kid because it involved cards. I think you can replace it if you win/opponent fails the survey question but you have to guess at it if you replace it. Lots of times people would replace an 8 and get another 8, lol donkaments.

Forgot your opponent gets a freeroll if you get the hi/lo wrong. Based on this I don't think it's awful to freeze on 2nd card...I'd probably continue on anything other than 7/8/9 though.

It's mostly ******ed b/c if the ace is your first card, it's always your first card even if you get one wrong so you're pretty much always going to get the 2nd card right.

Search YouTube. Some guy did this and somehow got it right on. Bob almost had a heart attack iirc.

Doesn't really have to do with wagers, but I don't know where else to ask this:

So the Celebrity Jeopardy Tournament has been on all week. I could have sworn Andy Richter was one of the semi-finalists by scoring like 65,000 and absolutely owning Wolf Blitzer. Yet he wasn't in any of the three semi-finals. Am I missing something? Am I thinking of last years tournament?

Andy is on tour with Conan, so he couldn't be on the show. So they put that annoying ass designer guy on instead.

Interesting show and wagers tonight. If only Dave were a stupid ass, he would have won the show. I'm sad because I wanted Dave to win the tournament.

He could have at least wagered a few thousand. $213 (I think that was his wager)? Really?

i forget what the scores were. his problem was that neither of the other two players wagered a lot, though. had stefan bet it all and terry bet what he had to bet to ensure a win had stefan got it right, the military man wins. i suspect that all 3 players have realized that final jeopardy has been considerably more difficult in the tournament of champions (though i felt tonight's was not that hard)

That dude got the last question in double jeopardy and it was a dd, and with a 2k lead he wagered 2k

lol at the female participant in today's show. Prior to the final question (daily double for her):

Champion: 14,800
Other Contestant: 10,200
Her: 10,000

She wagers $3,000(???) on a question where the answer is one of the words backwards in the clue. Get it right, which brings her to $13,000 heading into final jeopardy.

They all get the question wrong (Russian Composers), and final scores are"

Champion: 3,600ish
Other Contestant: 100
Her: 1,900ish

I'm assuming the correct strategy was for her to bid enough where she beats other contestant if he bids the max? Some massive fail.

what was worse is that before she made the $3k wager, she even made a comment about how she's not that risky or something and was pussing out...
