In a perfect world with perfect timing you only need to hit it once. But this is not what the contestant coordinators recommend, nor is it what I would think is optimal. The coordinators stress repeatedly hitting the button. Now, it should be mentioned that I do not take everything they say as gospel. For instance, they strongly suggest starting from the top of the categories.
Seeing as how if you attempt to ring in too early you are locked out for 0.2 seconds, why not attempt to ring in 4 times per second, or every 0.25 seconds. That way every time you press the button you have a chance of getting through. So why not start this process before it's time to ring in? That way the worst you could do is ring in 0.24 seconds into the process and as early as 0.01, rounding to the nearest hundredth.
Regardless, you should not ever just hit it once. You can try to time it perfectly and then repeatedly hit it every 0.25 after that with no downside.
