Oops, I missed that zealot didn't end in out. I considered it incorrect because it is a noun, not an adjective.

Amazing how that woman started out in the negative, had an incredible run working her way up to over 10k in the first round, then blew it all on a missed true daily double (that I got correct).

Did anyone else find FJ confusing today? I thought Truman would have sent a congratulatory telegram because of the headline saying he lost. I guess Dewey was telling reporters he thought he was going to win, which is why he was surprised? Maybe I’m just dumb.

Dewey was surprised because pollsters had told him he would win the election. They were wrong.

Yeah, if Truman had mistakenly sent a congratulatory telegram, it wouldn't have said he was surprised.

There are famous photos of morning editions of newspapers with the headline Dewey Wins. Most people went to bed on election night thinking Dewey won.

If he thought he lost then found out he won, he wouldn’t have been surprised?

I know this obviously, and I thought Truman himself may have been one of those people. Whatever, I’m overthinking this I guess. Although the fact that 2/3 contestants said Truman vindicates me a little I think.

Yes, but then he wouldn't have sent congratulations to the other guy after he found out he himself had won.

Not too much of an overthink, though. After I saw the clue I said to my wife "depends on whether or not the telegram was sent before or after the sender was surprised."

Then I said "Who's Dewey, but I'll probably be wrong."

50-50. I guessed right.

First place 18k, 2nd place 14k, 1st bets 17k on FJ. That's impressive even for Jeopardy contestant standards.

Today's episode is one of those where you wonder how all three contestants can be incredibly book smart yet still have no clue whatsoever.

3rd should have bet nothing/very small—only winning on a triple stumper
2nd at least went big on the final DD. Can’t fault the cover of 3rd bet too much though I think he really needs a stumper so should wager small.

1st- what an unforced error. I mean wtf.

Has to be up there with one of the worst wagers of all time, right? When she was looking sheepish before revealing the wager I thought she was doing the standard "oops, guess I don't win now" fakeout. When the number was revealed I literally threw my hands in the air in exasperation.

Don’t bet more than you have to or less than you need to is a solid 1st level wagering philosophy.

Interesting article on innumeracy-focus is on healthcare but we see it in action on J!

Quote:
But not everyone can understand and use numbers effectively. It turns out that a lot more people have adequate literacy than have adequate numeracy. One study found that while 99 percent of participants had adequate literacy, only 17 percent had better than ninth-grade numeracy skills.

According to data reported in 2013, almost a third of the U.S. adult population can do only simple operations with numbers — they can count, sort, and do simple arithmetic. If you translate that into the current U.S. adult population, there are about 73 million people who can do up to only basic problems with numbers.

LoL at 7/2 ep. Three-time defending champ rings in like three times to give non-month responses in "Book of the Month" category in which contestants are supposed to fill in the blank of a book title with a month. Even in the final clue of the category and after Alex had called him and the other guy out for their stupid responses, he still had no idea of the category's theme.

Wow. Three rational wagers last night.

Suzanne 14400-4001=10399 (2x = $34,800)
Jim : 18400-10401=7999
Dave : 10200-1993=8207

I’m ok w 2nd not cover betting third. Solo gets from third are much less common than triple stumpers.

Really don't like it when Alex gives more "information" in his introduction of the final jeopardy clue. It's particularly egregious when it is very oblique or has the chance to misdirect the players like what he said tonight may have.

Alex: "believe it or not if you're good at math it may help you our final today which has to do with American Authors"

clue: ~ her 1896 NYTimes obituary called her "possibly the most widely read author of fiction."

I have no explanation for what Alex is trying to do there, but it could only help to confuse the players in a high stress situation.

Another good bet by the champ, though.

7200 -> 0 bet
8000 -> 6401 bet
9600 -> 6401 bet

I was in total disbelief when they initially ruled ‘Google Maps’ wrong on the DD yesterday. You could argue that Maps didn’t provide a satellite view back then, but that would mean there’s just no right answer to that question. ‘Google Earth’ is definitely not the correct answer to a question about something being introduced in 2005.

Does anyone know what would have happened if he had answered ‘Google Earth’, got the money and then went on to win the game? Do they re-invite the other two contestants?

Jeopardy nerds,

7-12-18

Champion in third place 6400, bets 6399 (gets it right)
Second 14400, bets 14000 (gets it wrong)
First 15200

Bets 3200

WHAT!???!!!!?!!!?!

That seems like the optimal bet to maximize your chances of losing.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that... saw a few comments on Twitter

I don’t like that the Champ’s profession is “Storyteller”

$200 on the DD in SJ should've been a clue.
