Damn, what looked like a strong player undone by an inane FJ. And they end the season with that.

Yesterday's final jeopardy was worded horribly.

The title subject of a 2007 bestseller, it was discovered in Australia where today it's a state emblem.
I was thinking of something like Uluru or an ancient hominid (a la Australopithecus), that's what "discovered" implies. Maybe some flora or fauna that was found in the last couple of decades.

That's an extremely tough FJ but at least makes sense.

Quote:
This bird, found on the state flag of Western Australia is also the title of a 2007 bestseller.
That's still a difficult FJ but fair.

Quote:

That's still quite tough!

On what planet is "lemon" an acceptable response when the answer clearly is "lime" for what you eat after you lick salt and do a shot of tequila.

There is no way to know if one is a TOC caliber player after one game. I always chuckle when those on jboard use that label after a single game, and they do it at least once a week.

True but Mary seem to me like a very strong player and I would have not been shocked to see her go on a run.

Watching live as 12,800 vs 6,400 going into FJ. What will happen?

(I usually like going for 1st on a late DD but in this case not sure I loved it for returning champ who is now shutout in 3rd).

.....

6,400 went all in (wrong)
12800 bet LOL 6300 (wrong) WTF. 0 or 1 or certainly do not allow 3rd a chance.
So LOL 3rd bet 0 from 5100 and was a solo get.

So two for one on LOLW tonight.

Why is 2nd place's bet wrong?

Answer was wrong. Bet was spot on.

I rarely am home to watch but caught last night and of course see a wagering disaster in final. That question was very easy too and 2/3 got it wrong. 3rd place should not have had a chance anyway but then could have won if she bet something.

I was seriously flabbergasted at how bad that wagering was by 1st place. I guess it goes to show that even if you have less than 50% of 1st's total, you'd might as well still go for it in case they do something boneheaded like tonight. On a side note, Scrooge McDuck should have absolutely been a completely acceptable answer. Even though Donald was technically their uncle and Scrooge was HIS uncle, the boys always referred to him as Uncle Scrooge, and he called them his nephews. He was an uncle in name and role, even if not by blood.

Woman $14,400
Guy $18,200

Woman wagers $4,000
Guy wagers $5,000
Both get it right... Hmmm

Guys cover bet is 10,601 if he misses he has 7599 left. Womans bet is rational.

Guy acts as if if woman makes a rational cover bet. Woman's max bet should be 6,800 (to stay at/above 7,600). That makes guys 5,000 bet rational.

Don't think either is optimal, but both generally fit game theory (of course I think the observed betting patterns should assume non-rational wagers and first should cover bet).

In a heads up FJ, unless 1st believes 2nd is clueless, the assumption should be that 2nd does not bet everything as then 2nd can't win when both miss.

Somewhere back there ITT, it figured to be a very close call. The fraction of the time second "shoves" is about 40% to make the choice roughly a coin flip.

I'd probably go, category I like: probably cover bet (also if opponents seems to like strongly as well). And vice versa.

Isn't it correct for the leader to minimize variables and just wager enough to win if they're correct?

That seems the obvious choice. However if close 2nd place players wise up and bet small then cover betting is not optimal. Only the irrational wagers of 2nd make cover betting worth it. If close 2nd never went big then first would limit its win percent to the percent of time they are correct.

Of course we don't know what second is going to do. I'm cover betting unless I HATE the category or have seen a returning champ wager small in a similar situation.

Was so weird... Why’d she think she was going to know it?
No answers on $200 and $400, let’s ring in on $600 and guess a baseball team

Uh, the men were just as clueless (OK, at least they didn't make random, wrong-sport guesses).

OTOH, I don't LOL at a woman from India not knowing anything about NFL history. I do, however, smh at men from the US not knowing.
