I guess Community has that chance if they try and go to a 5th season or 6th season. MF and the League have an open enough story line where there is now time constraint holding them down.
That countdown was possibly the worst thing I have ever seen on TV. You don't count down to the sudden death of Marshall's father. Maybe a random slap of the slap bet or Marshall & Lilly being pregnant (which I admit would have been stupid), but his dad's death in that spot is just real bad.
yes the limiting aspect of the mother doesn't help but the drop off is more than just that. i realize shows rarely change their core cast but himym really needed/needs new dynamics. season one with ted's cupcake GF victoria being one example. stella being another. even if they brought brad (marshall's law school friend) or ted's sister (who is hot/was allegedly moving to nyc) around for an arc the permutations would increase enough to keep things fresh. wendy or carl from the bar even. the recent ep where marshall and robin hung out solo was an attempt (to go unlikely pairings within the group) but they handled it by making it akward which is lazy/not funny. sure there was don but he was background at best. hopefully zoey sticks around cuz she's hot/opens things up.
maybe some 2+2er that moonlights as a sitcom writer will come in here and say blasphemy you just don't mess with the nucleus but come on...with 5 main characters, 2 of which are married to each other, 1 of which is a ladies' man that practically refuses to be in relationships, 1 of which that is sort of the female equivalent, and the MC who we know so much about that most of the people he interacts with we know will amount to nothing.
and your falling asleep to CBS comment isn't completely true cuz this show struggled with ratings early on and still does to a degree.
but yes, community could get awkward if/when they graduate. but MF and TL are not immune to this stuff. more than anything it's about using up plot ideas and either having to rework them or get more ridiculous. the office being a prime example imo.
and yes, i agree...the countdown to death was just poor taste.
