dammit, looking for the numbers is really distracting me and I'm only through 1/3 of the show and tilted that I missed 45 and 38

i just rewatched and still hated it. the ending is the perfect example of how lost the show is. they truly have no idea of what works anymore. since they're struggling with comedy, they go for drama but it fails so hard (where there was once a time they mastered both aka end of season 1 on the steps in the rain).

PJ joked about outsourced, but i watch (mainly because i watch more tv than any of you i'm sure) and it's not terrible because it's just 22 minutes with a few laughs and one pretty indian girl. himym, however, has turned into a farce. the countdown from 50 thing was mindblowing in its worthlessness. and it was pretty lazy imo. too many books, changing metro news 1 to 22 offended me, anything that hung in the office then changed in the next scene made me want to go back to 2006 when i started watching himym and never start, the 6 in a row lottery ticker should warrant somebody's firing on the show. i was ok with the high 5 though.

am i bitter? you better believe it. mainly because i fear that MF, community, the league will all crash as hard as himym has and i don't want to live in that world =/

The real problem is HIMYM should have been over two seasons ago or at least last season should have been the end. But now they are dragging it out because the ratings are based on boxes that are placed in people's houses that fall asleep at 8 with CBS on every night.

I guess Community has that chance if they try and go to a 5th season or 6th season. MF and the League have an open enough story line where there is now time constraint holding them down.

That countdown was possibly the worst thing I have ever seen on TV. You don't count down to the sudden death of Marshall's father. Maybe a random slap of the slap bet or Marshall & Lilly being pregnant (which I admit would have been stupid), but his dad's death in that spot is just real bad.

sitcom that are comedies
-----

two and a half men
big bang theory
seinfeld

sitcoms that are a hybrid between comedy and drama
--------
frasier
friends
how i met your mother

i'm not commenting on the quality of the shows, just that HIMYM is not a straight comedy

although I think it was a cheap ploy by the writers, two things

1. it was really sad

2. both actors played that scene really well, I really believed it

yes the limiting aspect of the mother doesn't help but the drop off is more than just that. i realize shows rarely change their core cast but himym really needed/needs new dynamics. season one with ted's cupcake GF victoria being one example. stella being another. even if they brought brad (marshall's law school friend) or ted's sister (who is hot/was allegedly moving to nyc) around for an arc the permutations would increase enough to keep things fresh. wendy or carl from the bar even. the recent ep where marshall and robin hung out solo was an attempt (to go unlikely pairings within the group) but they handled it by making it akward which is lazy/not funny. sure there was don but he was background at best. hopefully zoey sticks around cuz she's hot/opens things up.

maybe some 2+2er that moonlights as a sitcom writer will come in here and say blasphemy you just don't mess with the nucleus but come on...with 5 main characters, 2 of which are married to each other, 1 of which is a ladies' man that practically refuses to be in relationships, 1 of which that is sort of the female equivalent, and the MC who we know so much about that most of the people he interacts with we know will amount to nothing.

and your falling asleep to CBS comment isn't completely true cuz this show struggled with ratings early on and still does to a degree.

but yes, community could get awkward if/when they graduate. but MF and TL are not immune to this stuff. more than anything it's about using up plot ideas and either having to rework them or get more ridiculous. the office being a prime example imo.

and yes, i agree...the countdown to death was just poor taste.

HIMYM is not a comedydrama
it's pretty simply a comedy

Sounds like he is pretty out of touch. The numbers were distracting obvious and he thinks people watch the episodes multiple times.

no, it's a comedy and drama

look at season 1, there are tons of heart felt moments, them trying to be emotional. it works.

There is a huge difference between these shows. The top are straight comedies. The other two are comedies that have more drama in them. There is no drama on Seinfeld and BBT

Seinfeld and Big Bang Theory

and

Friends and How I Met Your Mother

It was generally pretty meh, had a few jokes here and there, the last scene was really well done even if it is pretty cliche linking life and death like that.

I'm up in the air on the episode. Not completely horrid, but not all that good. Jason and Alyson did really well in that last scene. I almost forgot Alyson can act. Most of her lines in this episode were delivered kinda meh, but she did great there. Jason is always good, and even that surprised me.

So basically, the same thing as most people thought.

I liked the ep more than most people I guess. Didn't see the numbers @ all so didn't have that negative. Thought this was the first Marshall Lily baby storyline I didn't completely hate. I thought Barney added some laughs. I also thought the ending was v well acted and unexpected. The other stuff w/ the parents randomly showing up was all meh @ best, but I admit I prob laughed once.

Agree with this, plus when one of my good friends lost his dad a few years ago his exact words were, "I'm not ready for this."
