This was seemingly created without anyone knowing about it.

It's a drama, it's $5 for episode 1 and it's 1h7m long. Louis and Steve Buscemi are the stars.

I haven't watched yet but apparently it's similar in tone to the more poignant (read: typically less funny) Louie episodes. From comments I've read it's good, and has also been compared to Cheers meets a stage play.

too cool.

I was wondering what that spam email was about. I thought he was promoting his friends 1 hour special or something so i ignored it.

Yeah, it was shorter then usual too. So I thought it was a hack or something.

I'd love to see this but I'm not about to pay 5 bucks for 1 episode of a show I know nothing about. I would pay 5 bucks for a new Louis CK standup special.

Yeah, that was ****ing brilliant.

Spoiler:
I was almost in tears laughing at the scene when Pete (Steve Buscemi) just sat down in the middle of Horace and his daughter. I can't even explain exactly why, but it was so hilarious to me. There was even a point I forgot he was there and then they showed him on camera and I lost it again.

There were heaps of other unconventionally funny moments that came out of nowhere in between the serious drama.

Also I'm not a film/tv/cinematography 'buff' so I can't explain it well but I always seem to love the style that Louis shoots his shows in. It seems more artistic and real - maybe someone else can explain why that is.

I wonder how many episodes it's going to be - I can see it going downhill and dragging on if it's too much of the same going forward.

If I could go back in time I'd pay about $25 knowing what I know now. To say it was one of the freshest things I've seen in an era where everything has been done is putting it mildly.

I know it's not going to be for everyone, but I thought it was absolute genius. And the heavyweight actors involved take a real good script and turn it into a pure gem.

That was shot almost exactly the way a play is written and performed.
Spoiler:
The fact that it takes place in only 2 places for over an hour and that both are extremely obvious sets made to look like sets tells me he wanted it to look and feel like the theatre.
. The writing is also much closer to theatre than television, giving characters very long monologues that are atypical to the sitcom or the modern TV comedy. The subject matter was also extremely deep and dark for comedy.

I doubt they do more than 4-6 episodes. Honestly I'm still over the moon about Alan Alda. This is like MASH caliber for him, but better.

Yeah I agree. I'm sure it's good but Netflix is 9 bucks a month for everything. I'm not paying 5 bucks for one episode of a show. Louie should just make a deal with Netflix or Amazon so everyone can see it without having to pay per episode.

Best case scenario is you like the show and have to pop out $50+ for the full season? As much as I'll watch anything he does, seems a little absurd.

Do you ever still go to the movies?

lol at equating the 1st episode of some web series to a feature film in a theater, talk about stupid.

If Louie jerked off in front of some young comedian chick in his trailer for 2 minutes, recorded it then sold it for $5, I'd buy it without a second thought

If Louie farted in a bottle and sold it for $5 I'd also buy it without thinking

This is Louie CK here people

Its $5 ****ing dollars you poor pieces of ****

Really? The episode is 67 minutes long. I think it's not really a stretch to make the comparison of $5 for 67 mins vs $15 for 120 mins.

I think in the comedy world another really apt comparison is spending $12 to get into a comedy club, parking, buying 2-3 drinks, and you get about 90 mins of laughs. I got way more enjoyment out of this $5 download.

Ultimately if a person wants to use the Netflix price as the bar for what entertainment costs, then yes you'll never be able to justify the $5. But I like going to the movies and going to comedy clubs. As such when my wife and I spent the $5 last night for something as incredible as that, it was an absolute steal in my books. But I'm also buying stand up sets from my favorite comics for $5-$6 because that too is an incredibly low price for really quality work. I'm also a firm believer in supporting the arts and exceptional talent for me is worth rewarding. I almost find it criminal that I gave just $5 for that. It was that good.

ps: if you ever spend $5 on a fluffy vanilla infused half something or other coffee Starbucks but won't spend $5 here, then you block me now. That's how little I think of you

I assumed this was sarcastic but then I saw a few other comments with the same sentiment. Are you guys homeless or something? Bottled water at the airport is $5, and its $10-$20 to park your car in any city that doesn't suck balls. Like seroisulsy this is one of the most wtf things I've ever read about entertainment... and that's not even considering the fact that the subject matter here is an hour of art from the best active living comedian performed by world-class performers.

What's the farthest you would go outside and walk right now to pick up a $1 bill? Probably not too terribly far (I'm likely wrong about this, but whatever.) Yet you wouldn't spend a handful of negligible units to be entertained in your own home? You guys are doing it so very, very wrong.

Just saw it....interesting.

Very much a piece of theater, with an amazing cast. Louie has got real talent as a playwright, but he's got to get rid of the obvious political grandstanding. As good as that Kurt Metzger monologue about conservatives and liberals was, it just felt out of place. Stick to the real, human drama that's been created, and it could be something really special.

I think a lot of people differ on that opinion (myself and the New Yorker for example). I really liked the topical political stuff, so did my wife.

Anyone know who in television has ever done what Louis has with this dramatic/sad comedy? I can recall brief flashes of it in things like Black Adder (the WW1 segment), but has there ever been an entire series? Because if not then he's basically invented a tv genre. To do that in 2016 is pretty impressive.

Not to derail the thread because I know people who've actually seen it may wish to discuss it...

but you seem to think 5 bucks is negligible, like a couple of pennies on the street. True it's not a lot of money but people can determine what something is worth to them, no?

FWIW I wouldn't spend 5 bucks on a bottle of water either, or a Hershey bar, or anything else that I don't think should cost 5 dollars.

Anyway show sounds interesting. Will watch if it ever shows up on Netflix or Amazon Prime (both of which I have because I think they are worth the money).

please for the love of God can we put a lid on the "is this worth $5".
its totally fine if someone doesn't want to spend it and for most it's well worth the $ but either way it's really not worth derailing the thread over.

Actually disagree on that too. I think it's a very interesting topic, and Louis CK has been destabilizing the ticketing industry in his way for a while now. Here he's decided to cut out the networks. The viability of it all is super fascinating to me. I fully expect other big stars to follow this up very soon if it works for Louis.

The only thing negative I'd have to say, is that Louie does not have much range as an actor

Of course, that's the whole basis of capitalism. The consumer decides what products are worth to them. My point isn't that I take issue with the general concept of capitalism... it's that I take issue with the scale some people are using to frame their complaints. If a $5 charge for entertainment meets the threshold for pain, you will find that your free time will be largely occupied by the nuisances of life's minutiae since things like water and parking will require a similar outlay of cash (particularly if you frequently think such things are overpriced.)

Penny wise and pound foolish, don't sweat the small stuff, I don't know pick a cliche and embrace it. Then enjoy your free time, it is finite.

This was good. Edie Falco really brought it in her brief appearance. She always does.

'Trump. Let's just get this **** over with' was a great line. I liked that guy's whole speech.
