The scene shifting from the testimony to the events at the plant on night of the explosion was just so well done.

I still can't quite work out whether Dyatlov was utterly delusional or feeling extreme pressure to get this test done. I guess it was a bit of both.

He's near the top, but he still trails this guy in potential lives saved.

The HBO podcast Chernobyl where the directors discuss each episode is also fascinating (been mentioned before itt).

It turns out that this was not Dyatalov’s first accident. He used to work in a shipyard installing reactors into Soviet submarines where he was exposed to radiation. His son died of Leukemia, but it’s not known if the two incidents were related. I’m paraphrasing here, but the directors mentioned that they thought he had some sort of weird delusion/obsession with being in control of nuclear power.

Def recommend the podcast.

LOL yourself. Even if 100% of the ICBM's they would launched had Petrov followed orders would've failed, our response would've glassed a good deal of the USSR.

So yeah, Petrov saved a lot of lives.

I was just laughing cuz twice the world came close millions dieing from nuclear threats cuz the Soviets have **** equipment. I remember my history teacher telling me about Soviet cars, no rubber for seals so rain water would leak in, big heavy tanks where everything just broke down, worthless cars that didn't make it to 50k miles a lot of times. I don't remember all the details but it was just known that they produced horrible products and seeing them doing the same with important equipment like a satellite meant to detect IBMs or the actual design of a nuclear reactor.

Just wow!! Their incompetence almost caused a horror story. 2 TIMES!! Makes you wonder what we don't know about lol.

I remember the Cold War very well..."we will bury you." The Evil Empire. I thought the Soviets were pure evil, because that's what we were taught.

Then, Sting changed my mind:

I'm being flip, but it's true lol

Riveting final episode, especially juxtaposing the scenes at Chernobyl with the courtroom testimony. And wow did they get some of the likenesses spot on.

I wonder how much longer Legasov would've lived had he not taken his life. They showed his hair starting to fall out for whatever that's worth; and with Shcherbina dying within a couple of years, he also probably would not have been long for this world had he opted not to commit suicide.

I remember the West Wing had a episode where they claimed Norman Borlaug saved the most lives. He invented winter wheat.

I haven't rewatched the first episode yet, but irrc in the opening scenes leading up to his suicide he looked distinctly unhealthy, and with a lot less hair.

Question: of all the things to cheap out on and not remedy instantly, why the f would they choose literally the last line of defense that would prevent a massive catastrophe??!!! That blew my mind.

Or they didn't understand what they were being told. The Party leadership essentially trusted nobody who contradicted their decisions, especially scientists.

Note Shcherbina's initial interaction with Legasov.

I rewatched episode one and knowing what you know after episode 5 there's a lot of little touches that enrich the experience. I didn't catch that he was under KGB surveillance the first time through, for example.
