talked to two 55ish year old ukranian dudes tonight about this show. they told me they have no interest in watching it because it brings up bad feelings. one of them was there when it happened, and the other had already left, but still a lot of family and friends there.

the one who was there said he worked in a childcare at the time and it was only 20 kilometers away and still filled with kids!

idk if this link will work, but imdb made a little video tribute to the career of jared harris. no mention of "the terror" but still a ton of surprising and great work he has done. his career and talent is similar to phillip seymor hoffman

Did you tell them you think their stories are boring ?

I mean, just in the last couple of years:

The Expanse
The Crown
The Terror
Chernobyl

Jared Harris might be the best actor on the planet right now.

Shows delivered but a little overrated. The dude from mad men who plays valery is a big time over actor and ruins it. Coulda been great otherwise

PIKALOV: The number is not 3. It's 15,000.

SCHERBINA: What does that number mean?

LEGASOV: (turns red, shaking, shrieking, grabbing everyone by the lapels as he addresses the group) IT MEANS WE'RE ALL GONNA DIIIIIIIIE! RUN FOR YOUR ****ING LIVES!!!!! DO YOU HEAR WHAT I'M SAYING???? **** EUROPE, WE GOTTA GET OUTTA HERE!!!!

Yeah, he was a bit over the top in that scene (????????).

HBO has an incredibly deep roster of miniseries, Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Generation Kill, Show Me A Hero...

man I really think this is better than all of them. Pitch perfect at every level.

“I’ve already given my life, isn’t that enough?”
“No, I’m sorry, but it is not.”

is absolutely astonishing dialogue.

The ****ing guy who wrote Hangover 2 wrote that.

The disaster deconstruction was great during the trial. After episode 1, I spent a good 30 minutes reading about the second by second account of what was physically happening in the reactor and that segment made it crystal clear. Outstanding mini series.

Bravo. This should be at the top of everyone's highlight reel who was involved with this production. Just a spectacular presentation.

Special note of Alan Williams, who played the KGB Chief. Just chilling.

"You scientists with your reasons. WHEN THE BULLET HITS YOUR SKULL, WHAT REASON DOES IT MATTER?"

Mazin and Renck should be given carte blanche to make any damn thing they want to now.

Harris, Skarsgard, Watson, and Ritter led a stellar cast. Not a wrong note among them.

This show really gave me a sense of what it must like to live under that kind of regime. The only other movie that has done it that well is The Lives Of Others.

That testimony by Harris is perfect. I can't imagine trying to write something that has to be technically understood by the audience as well as making it work dramatically. Amazing work. As a writer myself, I'd love to see how many drafts of that scene Mazin went through.

And LOL Filthyvermin. Yet again.

Best show of the year. Just astoundingly good. The pet sequences just about made me weep. The quick closeups at the end of the cleanup of the little kittens...****ing hell.

Mix that with the terror of the rooftop cleanup and the 3 leads discussing how incredibly corrupt the Soviet Union was then...and my god, the depth of this show. When Skarsgård explodes into the phone that he knows they are listening to him and he doesn’t care...

Jesus, what a show
Yup.

Watching the finale later. Just fantastic in every conceivable way thus far. HBO continues to pwn.

I was born nearby after fleeing the disaster. I'm glad another generation will at least know what I'm talking about when I reference it. I'll let my family know about the show and see if I can get their reactions.

Now here's a really long shot, but worth a try: Does anyone recall reading a blog around 2005 where some Ukrainian chick on a motorcycle went on her own to Pripyat (long before they started organizing tours there)? She went inside the abandoned houses, school, swimming hall, amusement park etc and posted tons of photos on her blog. I vaguely recall some really creepy **** like a two-headed cow or something just hanging out in the middle of the ghost town's former main street. That blog was making rounds on the internet a couple of years before social media became a thing and I think it got fairly popular.

edit: FOUND IT. Holy **** it's been ~14 years since I last read this. Thankfully all the images are stll there and it's still a really really great read. Enjoy! And probably not the best idea to read right before bed, there are images of mummified dogs and stuff in there. In case you don't want to read through the whole thing, here's a glimpse of what it's like.

edit 2: Oh cool, she's apparently written a book about this called Chernobyl Surfing. But that's the original blog I'm almost sure. Love the oldschool look too, damn so many memories from that era of the internet
Very cool, thx!

I seriously cant believe how good that episode was even knowing how good the series had been. Easily top 10 all time show.

Top to bottom outstanding. Makes me hate GoT even more.

This guys past writing credits were the Scary Movie and Hangover sequels!!!

Doesn’t seem impossible that Legasov is responsible for saving more lives than any human who has ever existed by getting Russia to fix the other 16 reactors.
