Lmao if that's what you heard when the old lady spoke then you have a terrible ear for accents.

im giving up. it's boring. made it halfway through this episode and quit. i think i quit right as they were about to kill the doggies.

i can see it's incredibly well done. its just boring. it's a chore to watch. i have better things to do.

I think Chernobyl is becoming a top 10 of all time TV shows. Perfect show, gripping, amazing.

I think it's fantastic although I can definitely see how some people might feel that way. It's a tough watch. IMO the series is best when it focuses on the heroism of the regular people (including those who were forced to shoot friendly dogs, Jesus I can't even imagine).

Based on previews the finale seems to concentrate more on the trial and the cover-up, which I suspect won't be as compelling (to me at least) as the firemen, miners, roof-clearers, etc.

I was not as much of a fan of episode 4 as I was #3, but it's still good television. The acting and production is all top notch.

I don’t see how anyone can’t be glued to their TV for this, but then again, I think GOT is boring...

Listening to the (great) podcast of the episode, I learned that some stuff actually way worse than what they showed, happened.

Something along the lines of running out of ammos and still having to get the job done. They shot the scene, but couldn't get around including it in the final cut.

-----------------

Also the scenes on the roof were absolutly insane.

I wonder what kind of stats those roof guys have healthwise. Dudes looking over the sides I'm just like "that guy's dead!" I wanna see what happened to that poor bastard that fell and got his foot stuck under the graphite. He's gonna melt like candle.

I think one of the dividing lines here is that since Chernobyl is based on true events and is staying historically accurate there's no mystery to uncover. We're not gonna find out that Emily Watson's character is secretly the daughter of Kruschev or something, there's not gonna be a grand reveal where we learn the incompetent guy who ****ed everything up early on was a CIA agent, it's just a story that's gripping as hell, impeccably well written and acted, with gorgeous movie quality cinematography.

There's no back and forth, there's no discussion of fan theories and people stanning for one character or another, all the discussion people have is "holy **** that was ****ing great but also now I'm sad."

It's a throwback to the way people watched television before LOST, the show doesn't give you homework or anything to do between episodes besides wait for the next episode.

Per the podcast: Exposure to radiation is measured in three dimensions:

--amount of radiation
--how close you are to the source
--how much time you stand there exposed

People who work with radiation are exposed to radiation. In small amounts, it's not noticeably harmful....but exposure over time adds up. Folks who work with it have a number, there is only so much radiation they can take in, say, a year's time, figuring they're going put X years into a career, etc. IE, there is a "lifetime" number, as in, you can't be around this any more, you've already absorbed all that a human can take in a lifetime.

Roof guys hit that "lifetime" number in 90 seconds.

Just rewatched episodes 1+2. Notes:

-- in the opening scene, Legasov tells his tape recorder that Dyatlov was sentenced to ten years hard labor for "criminal mismanagement".

-- the lady who delivers the Sand And Boron coded message is the fat Party leader's secretary.

-- first time we see fireman's wife, she is coming out of bathroom after we hear her vomiting.

You do understand that the bolded is precisely the feel they are going for, right?

This is why the show is elite. If you quit because the narrative is becoming uncomfortable, not interesting enough, you don't know what good storytelling is.

The show puts you right there in the midst of it. There is zero hope, no big reveal coming up, just the drudgery of your now short life to accomplish very little but to try to make the future have a small chance of not getting worse.

One person's GOAT is another person's bore. Heck - I never could get into Deadwood or Rectify, which were two of OOTV's all time show darlings, but I find this to be some of the best TV I've seen in recent memory.

I was wondering about the comment in the end how the soldiers were the last of 3000 or so. I wasn't sure if it meant everyone else was dead. I guess instead it was just that everyone could only take one trip up there and the job was finally done.

I felt awful for the poor sap who had to hang out there on the roof all day and give the soldiers their marching orders.

I've never thoroughly read up on Chernobyl and I'm finding the show fascinating and amazingly well made. It's up there with the best I've seen.

Also looking forward to diving into the details more once it's ended.

All those who still wanna complain about the accents, don’t bother, we get it, you’re morons. Go watch something else.

And LOL Filthyvermin. Yet again.

Best show of the year. Just astoundingly good. The pet sequences just about made me weep. The quick closeups at the end of the cleanup of the little kittens...****ing hell.

Mix that with the terror of the rooftop cleanup and the 3 leads discussing how incredibly corrupt the Soviet Union was then...and my god, the depth of this show. When Skarsgård explodes into the phone that he knows they are listening to him and he doesn’t care...

Jesus, what a show

Great point I saw on Twitter: give these characters accents, no matter how authentic, it turns this great show into a cartoon. We're not going for Hogan's Heroes over here.

I'm not following .. why would it turn the series into a cartoon exactly?

English/American people tend to consider the Russian accent funny/cartoony.

Oh I agree with that. I wasn't thinking straight when I made my post. For some reason my brain was thinking you meant if there were Russian speaking actors it would make the series cartoony.
