It's a shame this show is 100% scripted.

I feel let down that there is a second season. Pretty much every show in the first season was them talking about how broke they were and they only had enough funds for this year (and maybe not even the full year) etc etc. Now, magically, they can afford to give it a go for a second year.

Just found out about this show, shame it's scripted. When I was in AK I was able to visit several small towns that still had a few gold prospectors working and it was definitely an experience. Even for Alaska they were pretty incredible places to see, though I think I'd want to live there.

So is this basically a drama tv series masked as a documentary and the folks are professional actors?
Gold Rush Alaska Quote

as in they have screenwriters writing the episodes/storylines etc

yeah the second season first episode had to be written by some hollywood people because the whole first season the sunk more then 250k and 5 months of hard ass work digging a huge hole looking for gold and didn't come up with ****, but right before the snow came to call it a season, they finally fixed all there mistakes and finally got deep enough to know they were ready to start finding some serious gold. So they come back when the winter is over and they are ready to rock and roll and finally get all the gold they worked so hard for and start making some money, (they got more gold in the first day back then there whole first season) and they knew 100% it was gonna be good. Now time for the hollywood to make it really good. A veteran named dakota fred was sent to make sure they weren't completely screwing everything up half way thru the first season when the land owner figured out that they were not doing good at all and they weren't going to make any money for him. So during the off season, the head miner forgot to send the land owner his monthly check which made there whole lease legally voided, and the owner sold the property to dakota fred and then he kicked them all out, after they did all the hard work and were about to finally get the gold, so dakota fred basically got an amazing mine ready to have the gold handed to him with all the hard work done for free. The ultimate back stabber!! What a start to season 2 after a horrible outcome in season 1 and finally things start to look up, they get snaked big time!!

Oh man that first episode was tilting. Why is Harness even there, that guy is the biggest complainer ever. Not to mention all his back problems etc, think they should have found a replacement.

And lol at the big dilemma when they were lowering the pump, no one knows what to do and one genius says to back the 400 up, ya no ****!

Why would they scrip a show like this?

You'd think the last type of show to scrip would be trying to find gold.

But yea, it's dumb. Could have been better than Deadliest Catch if they did it right.

Sad to hear this was heavily scripted I enjoyed the first season. obv all reallity shows are scripted, but I thought quite a bit of it was in how they edited the show. Guess I'll take this off my dvr list.

My only familiarity with this show is from The Soup, but even from those minute long clips they showed all throughout season 1 I probably could've told you this show was 100% scripted. They just go way overboard with the double entendres.

But that doesn't mean it's not still hilarious.

It was funny when the narrorator said something like "For the 2nd time, it's make or break for these guys, etc."

Uhh no. You only get 1 shot at blowing your life savings. You don't upgrade $500,000 on equipment and get a do over 1 year later.

They all lived in nice houses too w/ farmland/lots of property.

I was I was that bad off. LOL.

I really like this show, and wish there was a computer game I could play that was like it. [not minecraft]

Scripted or not, its interesting to think about mining for gold as a way to make money in 2011. If they would have invested that 250,000 from the first year in gold and then sold it in season 2 they would have made hella money hahaha.

i find the other peoples stories way more interesting then the hoffman crew.
i thought the schnabels were making good money in gold. now they tell us they were merely just breaking even of late? i guess he made his money from logging. yet the hoffman crew is gonna somehow go up there and strike it rich. ya no.

apparently this is john schnabels autobiography:

I may be way off base, but I get the feeling that Discovery originally wanted to follow the Schnabels but they were too "boring" for TV so they created this fake Hoffman crap.

Another I find strange ab this show is it seems the math is way off. For example the bald dude/main character guy is stoked bc they are supposedly standing on 300k worth of gold. They mine for 150 days. They consistently say that it cost them $1000/day to mine, which I think is low bc last night they said the dozer was burning $1000/day in fuel. Then the price of all their equipment, food, power, etc. It just seems that even if they get the 300k out of the ground they break even at best. Just seems like a lot of work to make 10k.

End rant

It's also getting old continually seeing people get fed up and leave, only to come back the next day.
