starring jeff daniels and lady mary from downton abbey, and jojen reed from GoT
town of belle, somewhere in or near new mexico, has a mining disaster killing almost all the men in town. so the town is made up of just women and a handful of men, and a mine full of silver.
they didn't set any traps!! wouldn't they have a bunch of dynamite from the mine? put a bunch of a dynamite under the only bridge in town and set it off when they're riding over it. wtf??
and deputy whitey. wtf? his plan was to walk into the street alone into a gang of 30 killers? he could have gone in the building with all the other women, and killed 5-10 guys in the gane, but instead just walked out and immediately died. ridiculous.
also, the sherrif's plan was to walk up to the gang of killers and stand in front of them and hope none of them shot him. and it worked!
and they main hero, his plan was to charge into the middle of them firing his rifle while he was charging on his horse so he couldn't aim properly and just hope none of them shot him while he was charging straight at them, into them,
and then riding away.
and how did all the women know not to shoot the sheriff, and especially goode,
who they never saw before? it was so dusty and smoky you could barely see at all, but the knew which men to shoot and which men not to shoot.
I love westerns. I especially like gritty westerns. I should have loved this but I didn't. Was totally underwhelmed. Wasn't flat out terrible but filled with so much nonsense and try hard melodramatic moments that made me cringe. Lots of potential wasted here.
All great apart from the duff 6th episode, which was far too slow. Despite some tweaks to the formula the show's a very westerny-western, hitting a whole bunch of genre tropes and executing them well. The centre of the action may be a town populated almost wholly by women, but the story still revolves around two men. Michelle Dockery has lots of screen-time yet her role is underwritten as her focus is all on Jack O'Connell.
This show must have cost a fortune to produce. The sets have an authentic look to them and the cinematography goes far beyond what you'd expect from TV with some great sweeping shots of the landscape.
oh ya, that massacre he described where the whites dressed as indians and killed everyone actually happened. it was mormons that did it. pretty awful story.
Finale was my favorite episode of any show all year. Great series.
Spoiler discussing possible future of the series (not that I know anything - just that in discussing the future it gives away part of the finale results):
Spoiler:
I really hope we see another season. Not sure if they would center it on Roy Goode in CA, on the town, or perhaps on Alice Fletcher and McNue. Anyone hear if they plan a season 2?
It's a good thing that there's only one season. The story is complete, there's no narrative reason to extend it into a second season. So many successful shows outstay their welcome by continuing to produce seasons past the point when they've exhausted their good ideas. It's refreshing for a show to know when it's done and bring things to an end.
a show making new seasons is a freeroll. if it's bad, don't watch it. ridiculous to be opposed to new seasons
I always thought Bloodline would have been perfect as a one season and done. But they added new seasons which means it goes down in history as an epic piece of crap. One and dones are a great formula for my tastes.
