shotgun stories and nebraska were excellent, will check out the other two and now i want to watch shotgun stories again

a river runs through it and paris, texas are really good as well

most films set in small towns tend to fall into obvious cliches like everybody knowing each other - imoe this is only the case in company towns where everyone lives nearby and mostly work at the same place

the other is having way too much social events and infrastructure to house it that the local population couldn't possibly support

people imagine quaint towns where everyone shops at the same grocery store and get's their breakfast at the same diner but in reality it's nothing like that - where i grew up in a town of about 2k people it was a 10 minute drive for a convenience store, 20 min drive for a grocery store, but mostly we'd drive 45 minute to go to costco instead - people tend to take what happens in a the suburbs an hour outside of a major city and just figure they can change the scenery and suddenly it's now in a small town and overwhelming majority don't get it right at all

search party took a huge heel turn for me, season one is incredible, season 2 was like the movie very bad things where you just hate everyone and hate watching them horrible decision after horrible decision - oddly if i were watching it live i would have given up, but knowing there are 4 seasons gave me motivation to power through it - season 3 thus far also disapointing but now that there's a major plot point i kind of want to see how it plays out despite that it's gone full parody of millenials at this point and not even trying to be realistic - which is deeply disapointing because that's what i loved about the first season was the realism, by now the characters are definitely pushing their stereotype deeper with each progressing episode

spoilers ahead if you aren't at least halfway through season 3
Spoiler:
elliot went from a very driven (you don't start your own charity and get it going like he did if you're lazy) and with each episode becomes more flamboyantly gay and openly shallow and increasingly lazy - he went from a respectable person who ran his own charity to that gay guy at the club tweaking out on meth

portia went from a kind person with a high EQ who always lit up a room and was just really fun to someone so incredibly naive and stupid who was always in tears because of her own drama

drew goes from someone who is a bit nervous, fearful of losing dory, unsure of himself, crying at the office and has sexual issues to someone who has a violent past, sabotages the marriage and career of a colleague to get what he wants and suddenly has sexual desire for new an unattractive women

dory - starts off looking for find meaning in her life and genuinely caring about finding a missing acquaintance to now commanding others what to do and making incredibly brash and spontaneous decisions, bullying her parents, etc she's turning into a complete sociopath

chantal - perfect in every way, she fulfilled everything the story needed and is the one character to remain true to herself but now that everyone else is acting insane she's just an unnecessary addition, before she was subtle commentary and now that everyone is like her it's just over the top absurdness - i am guessing that everything gets pinned on her eventually because why else set it up that way with the fat frankie red herring - but fat frankie more than anything makes me feel like they are doing constant rewrites and just trying to close out plot points they opened to consider and ultimately decided to ignore

S1 of Search Party is incredible. Also the first 2 eps of season 2 work great. After that is definitely slides, S3 / 4 are more in the 'watchable' category.

Finished S1 of Atypical tonight. Really liking it so far. After some description of autism in the last episode we watched my gf asked me if I was autistic. I think she was kidding...

It's a solid show. Doesn't really drop off or improve that much in the next two seasons.

Just finished all seasons of Le Bureau.

Quite sad it's over, one of my favorite shows of all times. Already can't wait to rewatch it in a year or so.

Is there any other spy stuff out there that is at this level? I recently also watched Fauda, and while it's enjoyable compared to this it's just a random action show.

Spoiler:
Hard to pick a favorite season, would say something like S2=S3=S4>S1>S5. S5 felt quite different in a lot of ways, but it was still amazing. There's some plot lines that end quite abruptly in S5 and some plot lines that don't feel finished and a lot of key characters just disappeared in the final few episodes, but as a whole it definitely feels like an end to the series.

I found a French article with the head writer that says he's open to a S6 or spin-offs, but there's nothing confirmed publicly at this point.

The final episode also kinda killed me, it's been a long time since I felt so sad from watching a movie or show. It was done very well, you knew what was going to happen but it still hit me incredibly hard. And that dream sequence was amazing.

It did feel kind of uncharacteristic of Malotru to figure out he could be in danger, but not that Nadia could be a target.

In case you didn't know the last two episodes were completed by a totally different director/writer who was brought in at the last minute when the originator became exhausted. That is why the style of the two is nothing like the rest of the show. I've watched literally over a hundred multi-season TV shows over the past 30 years shows and, for me anyway, nothing comes close to the craftmanship and intensity of The Bureau. So nothing else to recommend. Some other shows I've just watched lately:

The Break (Belgium) police whodunit , tremendous lead character, I even liked S2 which many people disliked but I liked the Twin Peaks style of S2 which transcended the whodunit storyline, introduced a surprising supernatural element and many quirky characters, orgies, hippie commune, taggers painting penises everywhere which never get erased, and a crazy couple using spear guns in the woods. A-

The Bridge (Bron) Swedish S1 and S2 Police procedural about mass killings. The character studies, interaction and personal lives of the two lead detectives and the personal lives of other characters were interesting but the crimes and crime solving were implausible and dull. Also made Sweden look awful, dreary and drab. Overrated for me. grade B

The Border (Wataha) (The Pack) A group of Polish border police trying to solve all sorts of crimes along the Ukraine border forest. Beautiful outdoor cinematography made it worth watching along with a few quirky characters. S2>S1 Storyline , ehhh. grade B can be watched for free online somewhere

Blinded by the Lights Polish urban nightlife drug gangster show, like Gomorrah (TV series) also with tremendous cinematography and artful style and interesting characters and strong villains but way too many torture scenes. grade B+

Mare of Eastown E1_E3 .Set in rural USA PA., Most miserable characters I've seen in a while. People, please stop making babies and cheating and drinking. I dunno why they bothered to hire two British actors to play lead roles for this highly American setting. They do fine though. Glad it's only 7 episodes. Host of plot flaws. Could Mare be that stupid about heroin packets? I don't really care who did the murder. Will finish though.

I'm in for Mare of Eastown.

The American version of The Bridge was good too, Diane Kruger is obviously finer than frog hair and that adds to it.

I just watched the first 2 eps of the HBO series Rome. I had missed this when it first came around. Really liking it so far.

this is an amazing show imo, just be aware that despite them paying massive amounts of attention to things like costumes and props, they don't follow the actual history very closely, lots of things are done differently and in the wrong sequence for dramatic purposes - i view this as a bonus though because in a sense it meant fewer spoilers

spartacus on starz was not very good but a nice popcorn eating guilty pleasure of blood and tits, especially if you ever wondered what lucy lawless looked like if she were nude all the time

if you're into the rome aspect of it then check out I, Claudius, it's more a televized play and criminally slow paced but many critics argue it's the best tv show of all time, I fully agree, it's so well acted and so good once you get into it - it had an allstar theater cast, guys like john hurt and patrick stewart among others

about a decade later they tried the same formula again with the cleopatras but went with a campy angle, still pretty enjoyable though if you're a sucker for historical drama and of course they accurately depict costumes in that too which means a lot of freely hanging titties

both are available on youtube, titties and all

this might be my number 1 all time show. you're in for a treat.

season 1 probably better than season 2 though

it really sucks they cancelled the show. and they knew it was being cancelled so it messed up season 2. they tried to cram in and rush stuff

My understanding is that they had to end it because it was just was too expensive to make.

Too bad, but they wrapped it up pretty well.

I think Rome was too expensive, with not enough viewership. HBO had the Sopranos, so I'm guess they didn't feel the need to stick it out with Rome or Deadwood.

iirc at the time rome was the most expensive show ever made.

it could have been a great show even if the budget was smaller. most of the great stuff was the story telling and characters. it didn't need to be the most expensive show ever

Carnivale suffered the same fate as Rome. One of my great accomplishments of 2021 so far is indirectly convincing a third party at the poker table to give it a try through my spirited discussion about the show and how great it was with another Carnivale fan who happened to be at the table. The third party was merely listening to us without saying anything and reported back to me a week later out of nowhere that he was almost done with s1 and was absolutely loving the show, made me thrilled.

Carnival has been at the top of my “I really need to see this but I’ll never remember to watch it” for years. I think I’ll get started now so I can cross it off the list.

Awesome! Warning: s1 is pretty slow, especially by today's standards. That being said, the fellow I got to watch the show said that he didn't have any problem at all with the pace of the show. S2 goes a lot faster fyi.

SNL with Elon Musk tonight they made fun of Mayor of Easttown and her stupid accent. Probably the only funny thing on the show. lol

I had no idea Elon had Asperger's, but I had never heard him speak before, only on twitter.
