Re: OOTV Random Stuff Thread

Has anyone seen the show on bbc america called Luther? it stars idris elba as a a cop and is a six part miniseries where he solves cases, while being stalked by a woman whom he investigated but couldnt convict. Its my favorite show on tv and the theme song is pretty sick as well.

I watched all of it and can't really recommend it at all, at least for people who are used to american style television. Idris and his nemesis are pretty good but its pretty much a big monster of the week stuff that is really really standardly boring cop show stuff.

I don't know whether this is strictly in the spirit of this thread but it doesn't deserve it's own so I'll stick it in here.

How often do people actually laugh out loud while watching tv? I'm talking an audible laugh. You're watching it alone and you're sober. The new episode of whatever your favourite comedy is is on, how often are you laughing?

For me, even with the best/funniest of shows, it's a few times per season at most. It's not that I think they aren't funny, I do, and I do enjoy watching them, I just very, very rarely find myself actually laughing at the jokes. I watch all my shows alone with headphones on my laptop which probably influences it somewhat plus I'm not exactly a ray of sunshine anyway. I realise I'm near one extreme of the spectrum I was just curious to know where everyone else falls.

this is so weird to me. i'm terrible about this though, i laugh all the time when reading the internet, for example. i'm not like rolling in laughter when i watch funny television, but i will certainly laugh audibly.

Re: OOTV Random Stuff Thread

I recently discovered I have the Sundance channel (took so long cause it's on in high def), and watched an episode of Iconoclasts.

Anyone have episode recommendations? I saw the Bill Maher/Clive Davis ep and found it very compelling.

Only a few shows have me laughing out loud on a regular basis:

Eastbound & Down
The League
Always Sunny (although not much recently)

Spoiler:

That being said, I thought the last couple episodes were really good and reminded me a lot of The Shield where everyone is scrambling around trying to contain and handle situations but everything just keeps spiraling out of control. And getting worse.

(Obv it's nowhere near the quality of The Shield, it just gave me that same sense of desperation as everything hits the fan. And then the fan catches fire. And then the power goes out...)

Jesus. I thought with Parks & Rec returning in January that NBC would shuffle one of their Thursday night comedies to another evening. Instead they're adding a sixth and running them all in one night. I'm hoping Outsourced gets crushed at 10:30 improving the likelyhood that Community gets picked up for a third

Thursdays (Jan. 20)
8-8:30 p.m. Community
8:30-9 p.m. Perfect Couples
9-9:30 p.m. The Office
9:30-10 p.m. Parks and Recreation
10-10:30 p.m. 30 Rock
10:30-11 p.m. Outsourced

As an overall rule I laugh very rarely at television/movies (but in real life a lot and internet a decent amount). If I find a TV show that hits a proper chord with me then it can happen multiple times per episode - but most shows are never going to hit that chord, and it often takes several episodes for me to get into the characters enough to think they're funny. The laughs are also usually centered around one particular character, such as Jack Donaghy from 30 Rock or Spike from Buffy.

Im not gonna repeat what i said in the Comm thread, but the show has bounced around 4.2 to 5.6 million viewers (up and down all season, Halloween was the peak) and has had its season increased by two eps mirroring what they did last year. I would confidently put money on them being renewed for a third season to the point im not remotely worried about it now.

The show was expected to fall flat on its face running against Big Bang Theory and instead its viewing figures are basically the same as last season.

As ive said before, NBC cant afford to cancel a show consistently pulling 4.x-5.x million viewers to replace it with an unknown quantity.

I mainly watch shows alone with headphones, too. I probably laugh audibly a little more frequently than you. During some shows I have this grin on my face for the whole duration and don't always even acknowledge it. I've probably laughed the most during Seinfeld and Curb. Some excellent Britcom has also received a lot of audible laughter.

Re: OOTV Random Stuff Thread

what i find interesting is that question wasnt dumb nor did it really show a lack of attention. you can acknowledge everything that happened in the scene while remaining a bit confused about it all. at first i thought she was gonna get the dress to give to Harding's mistress. There is some uncertainty in the characters and they are still evolving. Especially Schroeder, who we've now seen several sides of, and her actions are not entirely predictable nor her motives always clear as a result.

obviously we'd like a smooth place to discuss this show, and cluttering it up with spam or trivial posts or whatever has the potential of significantly diminishing the quality of a thread. I appreciate Dids concern in this regard, though i think the particular case that an example was made of was not the best choice.

Anyone been watching Circus on PBS? I never turn it on, but saw some promo for it, and the first 4 hours of it have been fantastic.

The Dave Chappelle/Maya Angelou one was great imo. I also believe there was a Newman/Redford ep that was awesome as well.

I've just seen an hour of it (when they performed in NYC), and found it very entertaining.

Re: General TV Discussion and Thread for Shows Without A Thread Thread

Renamed/re-purposed this thread for a general "talk about TV" thread and for show that don't really warrant their own thread.

As per killa's request, this isn't a LC thread. This forum is part of OOT, so the LC chatter should be in the LC thread there. I think the content left in here is a pretty good example of what should be here.

Bumping this so it doesn't die.

Anybody watching Next Iron Chef (yes, there's a thread about it, but it has 3 responses).

I thought this season was really interesting, although two of my least favs made the finale. The food being made was pretty cool- and a bit step up from what we saw on Top Chef this season.

poor Ming

Canorra seems likes he owned the season, not a big fan of forgione...I feel like NIC is more about the food and the overall quality is better than top chef but it also seems like the chefs are more experienced...still like TC though...
