It wasn't good when his flashback memories were super dated in look.
And yeah I have watched lots of films and only remember some of that movie.
I don't think the idea of the show is bad. I would just do as little as possible to reference that film and would enter the concept of the anti Christ taking over the world in a different way. He certainly wouldn't be the protagonist of the show lol.
I'd have approached it as Damien is a young guy who is entering politics and one priest is the only person who believes who he really is, give him some connection to the last film to tie it back loosely. Bring in a partner for him to work with to flesh the show out a bit, an internet journalist with no credibility who mostly makes listicles but falls into the story fits well, and make Damien self aware but I wouldn't even give that reveal until mid season - so it starts with the audience not being sure if the priest is right or wrong and Damien seems good.
Jig it how you need to in order to match the biblical lore - I'd make him ex military to get a middle east connection for eg and that background as a veteran can drive his public perception. Give some dark background that they can dig into (interview people who served with him and have a whistleblower/witness get murdered which solidified the journalist chasing the story and believing the priest) and some kind of cult of followers who try to stop the protagonists.
Anyway **** it thats how I would develop the core idea of the show. Supernatural meets house of cards I guess.
