Has anyone watched Portlandia on IFC? Good/bad?

My sister, who lives in that area, thinks it's hilarious. I expect that it is, but based on what I've seen even if well done, even in parody I see enough hipster NW ****s in my everday life that I don't really want to watch any more.

The Kennedys miniseries which was supposed to air on The History Channel but dropped at the last minute has been looked at by every network and finally found a home. I've never heard of the ReelzChannel but apparently I have it in HD. History Channel dropped it for being too controversial.

I'm liking Portlandia, it's more sketch than anything. Fred and the kind of cute chick from Sleater-Kinney as different characters each segment and sometimes playing them in other episodes with tons of cameos and some decent laughs.

First three minutes of first episode are here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVmq9dq6Nsg

After watching the second episode, I was looking for Portland's reaction to the show, because they get **** on pretty hard, but consensus is they know they are getting **** on but like it. It's sold me to go check out Portland this year.

I just watched the first episode of Portlandia (at least I think it was, w/the song intro). I thought it was a fairly funny portrayal of the lifestyle (especially the lineage of the chicken in the restaurant scene). I'd give it another shot.

i got into the habit of recording/downloading random documentaries. there are some real gems out there. exciting stuff that you'd never know otherwise.

is there a point in making a separate Documentaries thread in this forum? a place where you could review and/or recommend stuff you've seen.

Here's my run-down:

NOVA and NOVA ScienceNOW on PBS are always good, even if a little too preachy/gimicky. The Spy Factory episode about the NSA is a good example of that.

BBC Earth was obviously great, though I prefer Sigourney Weaver's narration. highly recommended.

PBS's National Parks series was ok, but a little too long and dry. the cinematography is beautiful, but it's very historical, and noone really cares about what act of congress established such and such park, or allowed such and such river to be protected.

History Channel's Evolve series wonderful. I am kind of a sucker for evolution shows. The parts on the Eyes and Venom are very cool.

A few recent ones:

James Bond: The True Story was disappointing, aside from a few cool factoids.

watching currently The Wings of Russia -- pretty awesome. aviation is always a good documentary subject, and this is a russian production dubbed into english. obviously they makers are rightly very proud of the soviet aviation industry, so it's interesting to watch it just for the mentions of the great constructors/engineers who worked on such things. It's an 18 episode series, so definitely a long commitment.

I saw the first episode of An Idiot Abroad on Science Channel, I guess it was on Sky last year in Britain. Phenomenal is a total understatement, I was crying laughing for 45 minutes.

portlandia isn't amazing or anything but i have been enjoying it. if you're familiar with the stereotypes and sorta hate but also sorta have a soft spot for hipsters then it's a fun watch. also has good cameos - has already had steve buscemi, kyle mclachlan, aubrey plaza, aimee mann etc.

although I hated the first ep of Skins US, the last three have been pretty good. Never seen Skins UK so I can't compare it to anything.

One one of the Charlie Brooker shows he had this where they showed the first scene and it they managed to cram in 6 characters and fully express their relationships to each other AND give some background history all in one conversation meeting outside some building (a courthouse or police station i assume).

On that scene alone the show looked ridiculously terrible.

Anyone here watch Nova Science now?. Just started following this series and this season has been pretty good. It deals with one theme per episode and has 3-4 different segments related to it.

This week it was about animal intelligence and they showed a dog that has 1000 toys and recognizes each one by name, and had a bit about Alex the parrot as well.

There have been 4 episodes this season and I've found each one really fascinating and informative so far..

NBC wins though- because it's almost most work to not watch it inbetween Community/Office/P&R/30 Rock than not- and I'll stare and pretty girls and tolerate bad jokes for 30 minutes out of pure lazy.
ii pretty much agree with all of this. I'm still willing to give the show a shot... but its mostly due to laziness and that its inbetween shows i do want to watch.

Anyone check out Hard Time on National Geographic Channel? It's pretty compelling, they spent a year inside the Ohio penitentiary system. The first few episodes focused on the angles prisoners take to survive their time. I think the next few episodes are about female inmates, not sure if it will be as interesting.
