For the record, the terror definitely deserved its own thread

For whatever reason AMC really **** the bed in promoting it. The whole internet knew about Low Winter Sun and Hell on Wheels, which both sucked, but it's not clear from the advertising that it's an adaptation of a horror novel rather than a straightforward historical show. That's so weird, the book was from an an author I've heard of, and was a best seller that came out 10 years ago, you'd think they'd want to play UP the connection to source material that they presumably had to pay for.

Still liking Trust a lot. Great job on casting, and on locales. Like what happened with ACS Versace it does feel dragged out, but I'm nevertheless enjoying it quite a bit. My wife has no clue what happened IRL so she's REALLY into it. I guess I would be more so too had I not already known how it turned out.

The ending of The Terror was brilliant. Just an amazing piece of art. A meditation on love, duty, brotherhood, and death.

Finished last night. Loved it. I'm sad that it's probably gonna end up as the most underrated/underwatched show of the year.

I don't know if its just me but I felt like the first and second part of the season had two pretty different vibes, the first part was merely good TV while the second part was straight up amazing.

Jared Harris killed it.

Just one question though

Spoiler:
Not sure what you're supposed to understand from the very last minute when Crozier is kneeling in the snow?

High Maintenance on HBOGo/HBONow is amazing and everyone should give it a try. It has laugh out loud moments and the characters are excellent. All episodes are self contained and I suggest you start on episode 3 of season 1 and then circle back to the first 2 after you've found you love the show. the first two episodes are the weakest (still good) but it becomes and elite show starting with number 3.

The last half was definitely better, specifically the last 3 episodes. I think the Tuunbaq turned a lot of people off. On another board that I frequent, that was the jumping off point for quite a few.

Spoiler:
I thought it was just him patiently hunting for a seal. His new life

The dog one? I would say just start from the beginning of S1 or the or the shorts. All the eps are obviously different, but the dog one is more out there.

re: Terror finale

I didn't like it as much as y'all I guess. My major gripe:

Spoiler:
I didn't buy how Hickey went out at all. He was too vain to mutilate himself like that and try to appease the Tuunbaq in the way that he did imo (and sing like a complete idiot). More likely he would have tried to kill it somehow and even talked about the fact that it bled when they attacked it previously. idk I just thought the whole scene was a little silly.

In the novel, Hickey cuts out his tongue as well but is portrayed as completely insane from what I understand so it made more sense. He seemed of somewhat rational mind on the show; there was a calm method to everything he did.

I also really never totally understood what the Tuunbaq was or why it even existed so here is a summary from wikipedia:

"The Tuunbaq:
A creature from Inuit mythology, the Tuunbaq is an indestructible killing machine that has taken the form of a massive polar bear with an elongated neck. The product of a war between the Inuit gods, it has been banished to the frozen northern wastes. The Tuunbaq preys on all creatures within its icy domain but particularly likes to eat the souls of humans. Only the sixam ieua' - spirit governors of the sky - a select group of Inuit shaman specially bred for their psychic abilities, hold any sway over the beast. The sixam ieua allow the Tuunbaq to eat their tongues as a sign of their dedication, but they can summon the creature and pay homage to it with their throat singing and gifts of animal flesh. They communicate with it (and other sixam ieua) using a form of telepathy."

I did like the ending with Crozier, seemed appropriate. And as razorbacker pointed out, he was kneeling at the end because he was ice-fishing in regards to the question from above.

I thought Hickey came across as completely insane for several episodes, but keeping it under control because he had convinced himself he was sane and was great, his whole rambling speech before the attack was pitch perfect imo, and him convincing himself he could befriend the monster through being special fit with his delusions of grandeur. If he had been too crazy it would've been hard to buy him leading the mutineers.

The one thing that came off a little forced was
Spoiler:

Him making Crozier eat part of Goodsir. For the audience that scene had a ton of tension because we knew Goodsir had poisoned himself, but Hickey clearly hadn't even considered that possibility since he ate Goodsir too. So what was he doing, just some weird power play? Why did he care? It was just a little too neat of a callback to Goodsir's warning.

And yeah the last shot was just
Spoiler:

Crozier at peace in his new life.

Tunnbaq opinion
Spoiler:
I thought the author meant for the Tuunbaq to represent the force of the old shamanistic religion of the Eskimos. As they had done elsewhere in the world, the effect of the arrival and partial settlement of the Christian Westerners caused a spiritual conflict between the modern form of spirituality and an ancient one. After a struggle, it lead to the attenuation of the primitive religion.

Hickey-Crozier
Spoiler:
I think Hickey wanted Crozier to submit to his will and to debase himself by eating flesh to show everybody who was the new boss.

Started watching Silicon Valley, really good first 2 episodes. How are the following seasons? All worth it?

hard to answer that question, it depends what your tolerance is for quality dropping. just watch it until you don't want to any more.

If you enjoyed those 2 episodes, you'll likely enjoy the rest of the show too. The latest 2 seasons are generally considered worse, but not by that much.

Im fine with a drop in quality for later seasons, i do still have nightmares about dexter after season 4 though. Its more that i quit shows for when there is a good ending but they decide to keep it going. For example i quit the office after season 7, homeland s3 and vikings after S4 for that reason.

Ugh. I hate that everyone uses Homeland as THE example of a show that really jumps the shark after the first 2 seasons. I'm finally watching it for the first time and am about halfway through S2. It's great so far. I've been staying up way later than normal watching "just one more episode".

Oh i agree, homeland's first 2 seasons are really really good, 3 also oke. I dont think it jumped the shark after season 2, just a drop in quality. no idea about after s3. But you'll know what i mean at the end of season 3.

Still enjoying 2-3 eps a day of silicon valley as study breaks and an episode of the terror late at night when im done. Some really funny moments in silicon valley.

Sometimes an episode of DBZ for old times sake, mabye i will ever get to watching DBS

I hope this is shown straight away in Australia.

Watched the first season of Ash Vs the Evil Dead. It was pretty fun and decent comedies can be hard to find. I couldn't watch too many episodes straight though.
