Most book readers think that they can be careful enough to avoid spoilers for the TV crowd, and maybe most can, but there are definitely a few book readers that (accidentally or not) leaked spoilers and book info to the TV only crowd. (Note: I'm talking about known book readers who were leaking info accidentally or not, not just the people who pretend to not be book/wiki readers and intentionally make highly accurate "predictions"). And because of those few people that were bringing book info into the TV thread, all book readers are now (rightfully) under suspicion in the TV thread. It's easier to just say book readers shouldn't post in the TV thread at all.

What is the problem with just discussing things in the book thread, and merely lurking the TV thread?
The lack of understanding in this and so many other posts on the matter is bordering on absurd.

There were some issues in the first season with extremely mild "spoilers". Innocuous "speculation" by one or 2 bookreaders(this was completely out of line). Book rankings. Backstory from the books. Pretty sure that's it.

The thread became more strictly moderated and bookreaders were banned from anything but low level commentary. This problem has been solved for over two years.

People just keep on arguing about it, most of the time not even understanding wtf they're arguing about. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Oh good, another "why can't we post there" b**ch session. Really, why is it such an inconvenience to have this stupid conversation about Littlefinger's accent here where you don't have to worry at all about saying anything?

Lolololol, you guys must be trolling. Nobody gives a ****! We posted there in the past because we had no reason not to. If anyone is bitching, it's about the absurdity of the situation. Not about not being allowed to post there.

People are conflating our arguing against stupidity with fighting for a right to post in the thread, lol.

People blowing up over the ranking of books in quality remains one of the stupidest things I have ever seen on the internet in almost 20 years of being on it.

There were complaints about Phill and gizmo in the past IIRC. Those are just names I remember off the top of my head, not trying to specifically call them out or anything.

So you agree that it happened and that there had to be a crackdown by the mods to limit it.

Indeed it was especially bad in S1 when book readers were going in the TV thread and explaining Theon's entire backstory after the 2nd episode.

There were also some more minor cases with book readers revealing things like "Ros doesn't exist in the books". It seems like a fairly minor bit of book info, but it does tell a TV watcher that her character can't possibly be very important. Book readers would call attention to various scenes in the show hinting that they might have some foreshadowing or future importance. I also remember some cases of people referring to scenes that only happened in the book, not remembering that it didn't happen / wasn't shown in the TV show.

There was never a problem with major "Red Wedding" type spoilers coming from known book readers, but the bits of book info do piss off TV-only viewers.

People ranking the books in the "TV Show Discussion Only" thread was pretty stupid.

Like I said, most of the time book readers can post "low level commentary" and not spoil anything, but it's harder than you might think to not have your comments be influenced by book knowledge. Furthermore, it has been an issue in the past - and all it takes is ONE person to accidentally post book info. And finally, regardless of whether any book info gets posted, the TV show only viewers have to be on their guard against accidental spoilers from overly "helpful" book readers. So the easiest and safest solution is just to say book readers shouldn't post in the TV thread.

Again what is so awful about just posting in the book reader thread?

The way this book reader vs show watchers subject keeps being brought up makes me think this is like a marriage doomed for divorce. No matter how good things are, one of the two sides will always bring this subject up. I wish the no discussion rule would work ITT too. Cant stand this **** any longer.

Dunno about giz but I never spoiled anything unless you count ranking books which no sane person ever would.

Yeah, I don't remember who it was so this is not directed at Phil, but there were a couple of cases where book readers responded to some tv only poster's speculation with something along the lines of "is u crazy??"

No sane person would think people only watching the show would care about or want to hear about their book rankings, Phill.

that's the rub though - everyone has a different definition of a spoiler. I actually could see why people would be upset at the book ranking. it gives you information about the quality of what's to come. it's wonderful that you don't think that's a spoiler but other people do and those are the people whose opinion matters

the only way to know for sure that you aren't posting a spoiler is to simply NOT POST AT ALL in the thread.

it's a simple rule to follow that people make grey by deciding for themselves what is a spoiler and what isn't and then getting upset when someone else disagrees

Well, obviously we book readers who are discussing the rules and the calls for total exclusion of book readers think this is an insane level of paranoia and that we have something to offer the other thread - i.e. it will be better with us than without us. But we would think that, wouldn't we?

Either 72o is going to let us in or he isn't. If not, we can self-righteously think the TV show watchers are worse off without us. If we see something interesting being discussed over in the other thread, we can just quote it here and carry on the subthread here. Their loss.

My main concern is for people who have read some of the books but not all. They cant read this thread because of spoilers, but the can't post in the other thread, so they are effectively shut out. A policy which decreases valid content in one thread and excludes a subset of potential posters entirely is a bad policy, IMO. Did's modding approach, as it evolved, was the best possible approach on balance, again IMO.

Well that's not at all true. I definitely would had I not read the books. Why wouldn't I want to know that book 2>1 and that I should be pumped for next season?

Oh yeah they are having an exhibition of stuff used in the show in Belfast as that is where its mostly made, well in Ireland anyway, which includes the actual iron throne used. I will take pics. I think a few actors are also appearing. Its basically going to include costumes, weapons, actors, iron throne, the wall etc.

If anyone wants any particular photos give me a shout.

Just looking through it again, and it seems that this might be a promo for relook at season 3, rather than an actual teaser for season 4. So maybe that's why they have Catelyn Stark's character talking in it, not because of Stoneheart.
