only good writing the show has ever had has been basically verbatim transcribed from the novels, so seems unlikely

thats not really true, even in early seasons there was stuff added that was good like arya with tywin

Fair point, but I'm not optimistic the show writers can do well with just an outline. They haven't so far.

everytime someone brings up good show writing they mention tywin and arya and that's it.

last season had some pretty epic moments but it was like this:

show only **** -- show only **** ---show only **** ---show only **** --------epic moment , probably straight from the cliff notes of how things go by grrm --------- show only **** -- show only **** --show only **** --show only **** --

the only piece of dialogue that I actually enjoyed from last season that I feel like maybe it's not from the books is the talk between the hound, tormund and beric. and it's only interesting if you completely ignore the dumb **** they are doing while having that talk.

benniof and weiss are hacks. what have they ever done? nothing. im shocked they got the game of thrones gig.

but i do love the show. even the bad episodes, hell even the bad SCENES, are still some of the best stuff on tv. but it has little to do with the those two clowns.

Tywins intro, tyrion bronn whatsherface drinking game, queen of thorns and varys, Hardholme, stan is and shireen

They added a lot of good scenes (and some absolutely horrible ones) but they were almost all supplemental to the plot and not important for much else other than character development. Every time they have made changes to -or been in charge of- the main plot they've made atrocious decisions.

I'm hoping that the fact they veered well off piste from the books doesn't mean the ending will be different and that it will be heavily GRRM steered.

Was Game of Thrones really a big "get" at the time? Nobody except super nerds had even heard of it before season one on HBO, and the pilot was a disaster.

I meant the first episode. As far as I know we can also refer to the first episode of a show as the pilot. This one stands out because you notice a lot of time passes between the first ones. For example, they change tyrion's hair color and a lot of the characters mannerisms.

There was a previous (never aired) pilot made of GoT which is supposedly pretty terrible. Around 10% of the aired pilot is from that, the rest was all reshot. They had different actors playing Catelyn and Daenerys among others. Usually when people in GoT fandom say "the pilot" the unaired one is what they're talking about, often as a stick to beat Benioff and Weiss:

Quote:
Benioff and Weiss never anticipated having to refilm the pilot episode. After they finished, however, they showed a rough cut to their friend and fellow scriptwriter Craig Mazin (known for writing the scripts to The Hangover series's sequels and Identify Thief). They expected Mazin to give them a few written notes on points to refine, but instead the only thing he wrote on the notepad he handed back to them was "MASSIVE PROBLEM" spelled out in capital letters.
lol

yeah it was a big get. i think it was hbo's most expensive show? if not the most expensive, it was very expensive. people didn't know how huge it would be, but it was still a big deal.

Is it known which scenes survived the cut and made it into the new pilot?
