Everything old is new again.

The problem with relying on ANY information about when TWOW will be out, other than, you know, the publishers saying "we are printing the books now", is that GRRM himself has absolutely no idea how long anything is going to take him.

It's been done for a while Chris, I'm totally buying into this theory (or hoping) that he and the publishers just wanted to wait for the show to be done.

There have been signs that GRRM thinks he's almost done. Such as expanding the number of cons he's going to.

However he also thought he was almost done in 2015 when that Polish translator said he was told to expect the book by Christmas.

^ lol, totally misread this comment. read it as: he's almost done with writing and finishing books, so he's going to con everyone and start writing new series without ever finishing them.

I also think my interpretation is more likely to happen.

If he's done with TWOW he's got another book to write...

I predict GRRM's proteges will finish The Expanse series (9th and final book scheduled for 12/2019) before GRRM finishes ASOIAF.

I enjoy The Expanse but so far it is nowhere near the quality of AOIAF

Do you mean based on the TV show, or the books?

I'm more a SciFi fan than Fantasy, and what I really like about The Expanse is that the science behind the future they describe 90% is believable based on current science and tech and how they could reasonable change in 200-250 years.

That said, the worlds of ASOIAF are much more complex and detailed than those of The Expanse.

Both really. The first few seasons of GoT blow away the Expanse imo.

I'm on book 4. I enjoy it for the reasons you say (although at the same time they seem to be lacking a lot of basic technology in order for the plot to work better), but the plots are very simple and formulaic. Nothing wrong with that, but imo it's far easier to write than something as complex as ASOIAF.

It's possible the books become far more intricate though.

The 10% fantasy is the reactionless rocket drive they use. Space is a lot more boring when you are subject to the tyranny of the rocket equation.

True, that's the suspension of disbelief. But they're still subject to acceleration stress on the body. A lot easier to believe that than accelerating from 0 to c^x while sipping coffee like they do in Star Trek (and I'm a Trek fan).

I find The Expanse to better written than ASOIAF, although the world building of the latter is extraordinary.

ASOIAF's world building is A+ and the characterization is like an A. The prose is maybe a B-. Haven't read The Expanse.

i love the expanse books.... but it's kinda hard to say what's great about them. i don't think the characters are all that great. the story isn't that great. the writing is nothing special lol! but i love them!

i do like the earth politician woman. she's a pretty great character. and i like the martian marine woman. and i like the earth enhanced assassin woman. but they are 3 of like 20 characters.

i also like how the main hero guy james holden is kind of annoying, and most of the people in the world think he sucks lol

one of the novellas "the churn" is really well written. really well written. it's strange how that one book is so artistically written, but the others are just words telling a story without much thought to prose, imagery, or whatever.

We should probably end the derail (That I started) except book talk is frowned upon in The Expanse thread.

Re: the bolded: So you love "The Churn" and you don't include Amos as a great character? I love all 3 characters you cite, but they're all fighting for 2nd place beneath Amos.

Yeah so about that Chinese translator...

Hi, I was shocked today. So I logged into the famous GOT news outlet WIC, the headline is WINDS will come out in 2019. My adrenaline surged up 100%! Turns out the source is... myself! Well, I wonder which friend exported my post? LUL LUL (It was me. Sorry.) Or the foreign friends are looking at China for news now. I clarify: There is no official information on WINDS yet! That was purely my personal opinion.
