New book spoiler
Spoiler:
Not as much plot progression as I hoped for.
Want to know more about the gates/aliens/etc, and be done with this infighting of humans

Very minor book spoiler/comment. (not spoilery at all)
Spoiler:
My favourite interrogation scene of all time is in the last half of the book. It's pretty great.

I'm maybe halfway through book 6, spoiler is for book 5 though.

It's probably for the best that this show is a ~lock to only get one more season, the books get a bad case of filler-plot-itis. Like Vegasville's spoiler should get stapled to the monitors of the authors.

Book 5, especially, had no alien mystery in it at all. If you skipped the first 3 books and started from 4 it's like an entirely separate trilogy that introduces the gate and then tells us about a civil war with like 15 pages of cameos by proto-molecule ****. They also caught George RR Martin's disease where he keeps adding characters faster than he removes them.

Spoiler:

Why is Clarissa still a character? Her plot arc as the villain of book 3 was perfect. Similarly, Bobbie's character was tremendous in 2 as grunt in the wrong place at the wrong time. Since then it's just been grating coincidences to get her back into the action, John McClane syndrome. Our heroes being involved in every part of the narrative is fine because they are the heroes, but the cast of recurring peripheral characters makes the universe seem small.

Should probably start a ***NO BOOKREADERS*** thread if you can't keep this stuff in spoiler tags.

Haven't really followed any news around this show, why is it a lock that there's only one more season?

It's almost like the writers don't know where to go with the alien mystery plot line. In books 3 and 4 they tease us with the idea of the race that wiped out the race that created the protomolecule and then jkust leave it hanging.

I see why Clarissa is still around, though. I see her as a foil to explore Amos' character in more detail, but book 5, while it gives us great detail about the motivations of the 4 interplanetary Ronin that are the crew of the Roci, the Free Navy plot line is unresolved by the end of the book which then forces book 6 to address that and the alien mystery keeps a back seat.

One other question I have comes from ship names in Book 6. I've seen a "John Galt" and a "Dagny Taggert" which leads me to ask which culture has the Ayn Rand fixation, Belter or Martian (since the Free Navy got most of their ships from Mars)?

Yeah, I don't get that vibe out of it at all. SyFy is marketing the hell out of it, and shows like Continuum got more than 2 seasons on the network.

All this talkin' of the new season and no postin' of the trailer?

Good to see Bobbie finally -- she was my favorite character from the books.

Season 1 got garbage ratings and it looks expensive.

Post-book-6 spoilers, I was way more than halfway through it

Spoiler:

Incredibly they don't even wrap up the entire civil war plotline in 6. After an egregious deus ex machina, the book appears to be setting up book 7's main antagonist as the renegade Martians who have appeared in 1(one) chapter so far?

I don't mind adding a love interest for Amos and fleshing out his character, I read and enjoyed the novella about his youth and his plotline was the best part of book 5, I just think it's a bit lazy to bring back a character who completed her arc and then just... keep her around. For no real reason. She doesn't get any POV chapters in book 6 and she's just in the background entirely.

For sure. Some of the criticisms are valid, but it's still worth a read.

The authors have said that there's a very specific end point that they have in mind for the last book, and they have to move the pieces in certain ways to get there in the end. I'm sure some of the complaints about characters stems from the need to keep them around.

The most recent book was the weakest of the series, but it's still better than 99% of the crap out there.

I read it really quickly, it's not a bad book as a book, it's mediocre but well written.

The problem are more the bigger issue Vegasville mentions as far as whatever the Grand Plan the authors have.

Books 1 and 2 had essentially the same plot with essentially the same villain.

Book 3 was just great, man, book 3 was good I wanna re-read it.

Book 4 wasn't a great book as a single book but it SEEMED like it was the start of something interesting, but the last 2 books, yikes. Lot of filler.

So however many books this series is going to end up being, it should've been a smaller number. Book 6, for example, reads like the first half of a REALLY good book, like book 4 it's setup for what's next, but now they've had 3 consecutive setup books without any punchline books.

my gf always asks me to do that. Sometimes I do it, sometimes I just watch the ep and pretend that I haven't, heh. It's always a challenge to act surprised in some moments.

I'm liking the casting for Bobby I think. Granted she's not big enough, but how hard must it be to find a beautiful giant Samoan woman that can act? Pretty tall order to exactly nail the character.
