I'm having the same problem with this as I had with the first book. Too slow and I don't care about any of the characters. Really wish I liked it more.

Five was slow, especially compared to CQB. But it had tonnes of back story and details building the world.

Not sure if I should use spoilers for an episode that is out; this is a question about episode 5.

Spoiler:

Did I understand correctly that the part where we see the miners(?) and their children trying to surrender to the UN marines is actually a flashback?

And the marine who we see at the end of that scene is actually the guy who is now head of operations on the mormon project?

So they basically are telling us that this guy got big on the news years ago for being the marine who killed those people?

I think that's correct yeah

That is correct. Although it wasn't clear right away to me as well.

I think this would've been better on Amazon or Netflix. The slow burn of the mystery works in the book and would work while binging, but, without spoiling anything I think everyone watching "knows" that Miller's plotline of civil unrest and the missing girl must have SOMETHING to do with Holden's plotline of mysterious bad guys blowing up ships on the reg... But halfway through the season what that connection is just as big a mystery to the audience as it is to the characters.

IMO, and I'll spoil this, instead of trying to draw that connection through Miller's hunch,
Spoiler:

Invent some non-POV material that wasn't in the book. Some cryptic cutaways to the bad guys doing bad guy ****. Nothing that really explains it, but just in episodes 2-4 a handful of scenes where the thugs get hired away, do the events of Mao's journal as it happens, the Phoebe station situation not explained through exposition but actually shown, etc.

The time they spend on UN bickering and the Anderson flashbacks should've been spent cluing the audience into the actual plot.

Fly, I agree. Although, perhaps I'm just too accustomed to binging or having full 55-60 minute episodes w/o commercials.

I have no idea exactly where the show is going so maybe that helps me not see the UN stuff as being outside the plot.

Its clear the show knows where it is going (and yeah it clearly does with the books) but we don't need to rush there and viewers can be trusted to not need hand holding along the way.

I'm loving the background stuff about the UN and wish that Mars got the same treatment, maybe in season two, and I have full faith we will get there on the three big mysteries which will basically tie into one it seems. Building the universe is fine with me.

Great show. Far better than BSG and the other crap scifi shows I've tried to sit through such as Defiance. Characters aren't as cool as Firefly, but it's less cheesy and it gets right into the interesting overarching plot.

Spoiler:
Too bad about the Martian interrogator, he would have been a cool Naomi crew member I reckon.

I keep comparing Miller to Malcolm Reynolds and he is not nearly as entertaining. It's good work though, well written.

Last episode was the was the weakest...but I still love it. I agree that the Anderson Station massacre did not need to be shown. Are there really ten episodes this season? Not sure how they're going to get through book one in that time. A lot of amazing stuff happens.

And lol at the guy who though the book was slow.

Read somewhere that they only get through about 60-70% of book 1 in the first season. Guess that explains the pretty slow pace. Don't mind myself but I imagine they risk losing some viewers because of it.

Another good episode. Much preferred watching this in binge-mode over waiting week to week tho.

Advanced, high level, high tech, sci fi. My cup of tea. I'll watch it all for sure. Didn't read the book. It is funny to say that I don't have much real idea what is going on. That is, I'm not sure who are the good guys and who are the bad guys or if the conflicts are justified, or whether I care whether they find the missing girl. They needed to make her more intriguing. In other words the drama is muted. There are so many factions and sub-factions. Some characters speak in strange accents with their own slang. Some just speak in a new language, with no subtitles! The UN lady seems like a very important character but I often have no idea which feeling the actress is trying to convey whenever she speaks. She's so monotone. They borrowed stuff from Battlestar Galactica like the occasional drum music and space battles style which is a good idea. (Sorry but for me Battlestar Galactica and Firefly still top it so far.) The uncle and nephew miner scenes were okay but what was it about in relation the any of the main plot(s)? The show wants to be highly sophisticated to a fault so far imo, but maybe it will sort itself out nicely in future episodes. It has potential.

The uncle and nephew story was there to show how the tension between Mars and belters has escalated due to both sides blaming each other for the loss of the 2 ships, the Mars donnager and the belters Cant. I assume that asteroid was hurled in the direction of a Mars owned base, asteroid, moon, or towards Mars itself.

I took it as he tried to rape the martian ship that bordered them and ****ed em

Didn't it show the rocks hitting the Mars ship that boarded them? Before the missile hit the miners ship?

Was the nephew the same kid who was busted by Miller stealing water on Ceres?

Yep, was shown in the "previously on..." segment if that was present on what you watched.

WRT to the asteroid, I thought he threw it at the martian ship but the comments here reminded me of the scene last week of the UN lady watching asteroids hitting Earth atmosphere from the rooftop, and the dialog there - perhaps it's a pretty common thing for angry miners to do at this time?

The characters aren't sure either, that's why it's interesting.
