I disagree a bit. One of the reasons I love The Expanse (books and TV show) is that the science is believable. I see the protomolecule line is a hypothetically realistic examination of how we as a species would approach the discovery of advanced alien technology.
Magic? Remember the adage "sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." e.g., a cell phone would appear to be magic to someone from colonial America who was technologically advanced for that time, like Ben Franklin.
