The half season inside the gates may have been my favorite. Probably a hot take.

I disagree a bit. One of the reasons I love The Expanse (books and TV show) is that the science is believable. I see the protomolecule line is a hypothetically realistic examination of how we as a species would approach the discovery of advanced alien technology.

Magic? Remember the adage "sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." e.g., a cell phone would appear to be magic to someone from colonial America who was technologically advanced for that time, like Ben Franklin.

I think a matter of degree. I’ll talking magic in terms of Contact and the dumb Interstellar library thing.

I’m glad they have not turned the protomolecule into that after going in that direction with all the Miller stuff.

I just like when things are a reasonable extrapolation of technology for science fiction. The other stuff is more fantasy. I’m willing to suspend disbelief if it’s true fantasy (the force) but the Expanse tries to be more realistic so I want it to be constrained by technology.

Fair enough, and I agree that the "Miller in Holden's head" device is a bit off-putting.

Have you read the books?

No. I may after the series is done. I like having no expectations.

Naomi really is the worst, just kill her already.

This season is like, really bad. The Naomi/Marco/Filip interactions have been so staged and stretched. They should have resolved all of that in a couple episodes instead of stretching them out over 8. The Amos/Peaches storyline is completely irrelevant to the main plot and it's just boring as hell. Really disappointed

The season was awesome through the first 5 episodes. Last 3 episodes have been very meh.

I really enjoyed the prison break and some of the intense scenes in eps 1-5 but basically nothing has happened for 3 episodes

Maybe I shouldn't have mocked GoT so much for magically transporting people around.

Never ever regret mocking GOT for that!

But most of the slow GOT episodes were still good because the writing/dialogue between the characters kept it interesting. When people get bored with the best character AINEC (Amos), they're failing the audience.

The episode that got released this week was the worst of the season. So very little happened.

I didn't find them that bad. Full disclosure I skipped all scenes with Naomi.

I often wonder how hard it is for non-series regular actors who have to come on and do a belter accent...that's got to be hard to learn.

Yes. But I know plenty of folks that speak differently depending on setting.

It's actually a language, not just an accent. Hard to replicate for TV w/o subtitles (like with Klingon, Dothraki, etc.)

Below is an explanation from SyFy from season 1, so no spoiler.

https://www.syfy.com/the-expanse/blog/belter-creole-101

In spoilers below though not a plot spoiler, if you want to know more.

Spoiler:
The thing from the books they can't replicate is Belter physiology. The average Belter male is about 7' 4" and weighs maybe 140 lb. Elongated bodies due to life in micro G. Book Naomi is more than a head taller than Holden.

Book Martians tend to be somewhere in between Earthers and Belters. Book Bobbie is about the equivalent in size to Lebron James.

I guess dialect would probably be more correct than either. Wherever you draw the distinction.

Hmmmm I guess some hybrid language, but she also enunciatiates some words different. It's like in firefly except they never explain why they only speak Chinese and English.

It would be more she'd probably have a belter accent when not speaking belter.

Don't know if that was intentional, but came immediately to my mind.

The correct word for a hybrid from non-related languages is creole. Examples would be Haitian Creole (native Caribbean + French) or Cape Verdean Creole (Native African + Portuguese). Yiddish (I think) is also a creole.

A dialect is a subset of a single language, like Cantonese or Mandarin, both of which are Chinese.

Well we as viewers are very lucky that English won the day as the primary language of Sol humanity and that even Belter lingo is based on English enough that we can mostly understand it. I don’t hear any Rusher and Chiner commie speak.

I view Belter as an extreme dialect but Im no linguist. Hills of WV on steroids.

It's the second to last episode, I'm going to need Bezos to spend a couple extra dollars to actually get Clarissa's action scenes on camera instead of off

Marco is the worst character, by far. He looks like a Prince impersonator and the actor is awful.

Everything else is good, though.

I found outside explanations of what Naomi has been doing for the few episodes or I would have been clueless. Apparently it is really possible to survive space exposure for 15-20 secs . Also she was scraping ice to get water. Other electrical hacks explained too.

Good episode. Helped having basically no Naomi/Marco

Yeah you can survive for a short period of time. I want to say USSR put a dog in open space for like 10 seconds and it was fine. I could be making that up though. I assume those bullet hits on the window will be a problem soon.
