Phill- Have you ever read The Forever War, or more recently John Scalzi's Old Man's War?

Half of old man's war, it technically my "current book" but I've not opened it on Kindle in ages. I stopped out of running out of free time than not enjoying though.

Forever war I've not heard of before. Looks cool from skimming the wiki though.

Finished episodes 1-4. Series is good, really really good. On par or better than BSG season 1. So far sticking very close to the books and does an excellent job of conveying how fast things start to spiral out of control.

Huge fan of the books. First two episodes were decent...but not sure why they Holden's crew had to spend the whole episode in the shuttle...seems like a waste when so much has to happen by the end of the season.

Episode four is so so so good with the perfect balance of action and plot development. There was action in that episode I've never seen Hollywood do as well with mega budgets. The zero g headshot next to a vacuum was just crazy good gore.

For four episodes the show has been paced really well developing the big stories of what is going on without losing on the little stuff that lets you buy into a show. This thing should win awards (it won't because sci fi but whatever) and is maybe coming in just under the wire as my fave show of 2015.

Definitely agree expanse is shaping to be as good, if not better, than bsg at this point, it knows what it is thanks to the books so no angel religion was right reveals (I hope, not read them yet) and they got renewed for a second season seven months ago so they are obviously getting star treatment as deserved.

Wow this show is really good. I'm through 4 episodes and so far this is the best new show since Fargo. Didn't think I'd say that about a syfy show but there it is.

Episodes 3 and 4 really up the show's game...very good stuff. I'm thrilled that it looks like they didn't mess up one of the great sci-fi book series of the last fifteen years.

Hah the sound in space got me as well although it's not really that big of a deal and was expected.

Never read the books, enjoying the show somewhat though not to the extent of others maybe need to be a bookreader. Also the look of the Mars ship had me expecting Darth Vader to pop out at any moment

I've watched the first 3. It's pretty good, I'm entertained. Has kind of a B movie flava.

It's always tough for me to get over the extreme cheesiness in every syfy show, but I'm trying ep 1 now...

Episode 4's battle was pretty great.

And for those of you watching and liking it without first reading the books...but the books! They really are fantastic.

Haven't read the books, love the show. Is the book series finished? I don't really want to get george rr Martined.

They have finished 5 out of the supposedly 9 books.

However, the chance of getting Martined is smaller because Corey is actually two writers... they do have a connections to George RR martin IRL though...

They've pumped out 5 incredible books in a relatively short period of time. No way the show catches up to them.

LOVED these book. I worry that the show, while pretty good, lacks mass appeal. But I guess SyFy itself lacks mass appeal?

Also, Game of Thrones in space is a terrible analogy. It's just not even close. I don't think you could read the books and get that at all. Other than the fact that its 'dark' and 'gritty'? But those terms get thrown around so much nowadays.

One interesting thing about the show is that I'm much more interested in the Holden storyline than the Miller storyline, which is the opposite of how it was when I red the books. I'm not sure if its the actor or the writing or just thats its TV and not a book, but Miller's stuff in the books had a much cooler feel. Show Miller just seems a little generic.

---------------------

WRT Forever War and Old Man's War. Forever War is awesome. Just so so good. Classic for sure. One of the few books I've rated 5 stars on GoodReads. Old Man's War is fun? I dunno. I read 2 of the books in the series. It's a little too campy for me. Not bad, but overhyped I think.

It was fine this way for GOT, it'll be fine here.

Lol let's agree ahead of time to never need a full ****ing forum for tv only discussion though.

Also, unlike Game of Thrones, they haven't done anything stupid and made a bunch of awful pointless subplots that the show will want to gloss over real quick on the way to actual substance. Each book develops, very early on, a central mystery and a location to which that mystery is intimately connected. Then the book is about getting various characters to that place to solve the mystery. There's no ****ing Dorne chapters.
