Just caught up with the thread. I haven't read the books but I can't imagine what else you guys want from an actress playing Bobbie. She's 6ft tall, in great shape for a woman, and a pretty good actor. Would you rather have an amazonian woman who can't act?
Who is Drummer?

Who's criticized her? She's great.

A lot of bookreaders earlier in the thread were angry that she wasn't bigger/more imposing I guess? I couldn't really even understand it.

I've read the books and I think it's stupid not to realize that it's impossible to cast Belters as described in the books (even most NBA players aren't tall enough).

Yeah, but he's more of just a rando who works for her, his character got fleshed out for the show.

In the books, he's an older security guy, but IIRC, he only shows up when they go to meet with Mao.

Fairly predictable, but still thrilling episode. It's just getting better every week.

Did Holden and Christjen have some connection?

Remember in s1, Avasarala visits Holden's family home and speaks with (one of)his mother(s). Maybe he knew of the visit, maybe not.

But he certainly knows who she is, and he just finished his "We've just declared war on Earth and we're totally screwed" speech the scene before. So now he sees one of the most powerful Earth Politicians in the arms of a Martian marine, so the look on his face could be interpreted as "Now I have no clue WTF is going on."

This may be too much of a personal preference question, but I ordered the books finally and cranked through the 1st one really quick. Thoughts on continuing to read forward (when I reach that point) and pass the show's current season or hold tight and watch the TV episode first?

Another book question -

How do the novellas + short stories compare in quality to the main series? Specifically eyeing {Gods of Risk, The Vital Abyss, The Churn, The Butcher of Anderson Station}. I easily plowed through books 1-3 a few years ago and now I've got the available bandwidth to continue with the rest of the series, but I'm thinking I might resume my reading with the 4 novellas that take place chronologically before book 4.

Hoping someone says the novellas are of "Dunk and Egg" level quality...

The Novellas are excellent. Some aspects of the Butcher of Anderson Station and The Vital Abyss have already been touched on in the show. The Churn is the best (Amos' back story). The 5th one "Strange Dogs" pretty much takes place sometime after book 5, but won't really spoil anything if you've read book 4.

The show is about 2/3 of the way through book 2, so I'd say wait until episode 7, then read book 2.

Is anyone else thinking this season is a little step down in quality? I'm still liking it, but it's not quite grabbing me like it used to.

No, I think it's been fantastic. I guess it could easily be boring if it's all pre-spoiled from bookreading though, significant enjoyment is coming from surprise events and tension, for me. Alongside superb VFX work.

Actually, there are some minor detail departures from the book, which is fine, as there's more action at this point.

actually, it's weird, I have an odd blindspot with where we are in the show right now with regards to the books....not sure where we are! However, I do remember that I always thought the character of the religious leader was not very interesting.

About 3/4 into Book 2

Spoiler:
This point is one of my least favorite parts of the books. Obviously, Mars doesn't nuke earth in the books, but I think the way the book develops tension at this point doesn't play well on TV, so I'm fine with it. Also, in the book, Souther's not on the same ship as Nguyen.

The early intro of Pastor Anna is OK, allows the to get to the pont of book 3 right away at midseason. I think my onlyissue is I can't wait for book 3 in the show, which to me is where the real story starts to ramp up.

Not getting into spoilers though, I think they are cutting some subplots from book 2, unless they've got more non-book stuff planned(they have made some changes to the internal UN politics subplot from how it worked in the books so far) they are set up to do the climax of book 2 in the next couple of episodes.

I thought it was bit meaningless episode. Not that it was bad, but the last 2 episodes could have been a single episode without losing much.

I'm so confused, as I don't remember any of this from the books - didn't have that problem with the first two seasons.

Question for book readers:

Spoiler:
was the nuclear attack on Earth and the UN taking out Mars' nuclear capabilities in the books? Was this different from Mars showering Earth with big rocks, or did the nuclear attack replace the rock-shower? I hope not, that was one of my favorite things about the books.
