Quarter of the way through the new book....I was concerned at first because of the
Spoiler:
30-year jump forward
but it's still fantastic and doesn't really change much.

Finished the new book...pretty damn great. It's amazing how they keep this intricate plot going so well...and the 30-year time jump works brilliantly.

AND they get their books out on schedule. Their mentor might want to take a hint from that.

They have a contract for two more books and say that will be the end of this particular story but don't rule out other books in the universe.

A non-spoiler thing is that they did the 30 year jump but then never really had any of the people be old or have old people problems. I guess it's the future and there might be space botox and space steroids but there's a bit where Bobbie flirts with a bad guy guard? She's like 60 years old! Amos is still written as an intimidating monster of a man.

But my non-spoiler review is that it's the best book since 3 and a welcome return to having a well done plot that moves forward towards defined goals.

They mentioned some anti-aging stuff a little...plus, if they're mostly on the float, they wouldn't visibly age as much - no gravity weighing them down

It's almost 250 years in the future, they can re-grow limbs (they talk about this in s1e1 of the TV show), they have automated robo-doctors on ships, why is it hard to believe that humans have figured out ways to extend youthful life?

Think about how someone in 1767 would think about medicine and average life spans today?

Hell, right before WWII, the median life expectancy at birth in the US was only 62, today it's 76 for men and 81 for women.

Another example of how medical science moves, ACL/MCL injuries 40 years ago pretty much knocked an athlete out of the game for a year or two. Today, the recovery can be 6-8 weeks.

Just finished. It was really good. duh

Agree that it handled the aging the right way, but

Spoilers for the 3rd book, maybe someone can help me.

Spoiler:
I just got to the part where Ashford is retaking the Behemoth and Serge gets shot in the face. WTF? I thought we just spent hundreds of pages discussing how guns can't be use because bullets move too quickly. Did I miss something huge?

Agree with most of what's been said re: too much filler. One thing that really,
really bugged me. What happened to the protomolecule in Fred's office that was stolen by the Free Navy in Book 5? As far as I know that wasn't mentioned a single time in Book 6. Sooooo, it must be with the Martian remnant in Laconia, right? If they just drop it and never mention it again that will be ridiculous.

This leads me to believe that something beyond the gates is coming, whether it's whatever advanced civilization wiped out the race that developed the Protomolecule, or some other group of humans that went through he gates and used the advanced tech there to create a super-weapon.

We'll have to wait until December or so to find out.
finished Book 7, looks like we were on the right track (I swear I had no idea and was just speculating)

loved it and agree with everyone it was the best book in awhile

Spoiler:
Aging stuff bothered me at first too, but I just decided to ignore it after awhile. If they needed to do the time jump to move the plot forward, it was worth any aging weirdness.

I feel like there has to be another time jump of at least five to ten years or so now, though, so we will see how it continues to play out.

Show delivers. Too bad it couldn't move faster though. The books just have so much to deliver it's hard for the series to keep the pace.

The actress who plays Drummer is so good.

Just caught up with the thread. I haven't read the books but I can't imagine what else you guys want from an actress playing Bobbie. She's 6ft tall, in great shape for a woman, and a pretty good actor. Would you rather have an amazonian woman who can't act?
